Being a newbie, I guess I could have thought about getting snow out of the roof rack. The crazy storm last week left our area, first with dry snow and then with a cover of sleet that turned into what they are now calling, "snowcrete," as the temps stayed in the teens and twenties over the past nine days. I wound up with two-inch thick blocks of ice the size of the spaces between roof rack rails. They just slid around and made noises for several days until the sun did enough to get them to a size where they could be lifted out by me on a step stool ladder. Next time, I'll know to remove the snow while it is still fresh because it is nearly impossible to do so once the ice forms.

I don't need to put anything on my roof during the winter so I took off the crossbars for just this reason. Makes it WAY easier to get the snow off before it ices up. Only takes a couple minutes to remove them or put them back on, worth it if you're not carrying anything up there.

Luckily I figured it out pretty quick after the first storm and I've cleaned it after each since. Getting it out from behind the visor with the lightbar in the way is a treat.

I do use it to carry a few items but taking a couple of slats out in the winter to make it easier to clean is a good idea.

I was a part of that same storm. Just before it flipped from snow to sleet/rain I hit the roof and the rest of the 4Runner with my Greenworks blower - it blasted it all away and I felt pretty good about myself. Well, then the 1" of slush formed and froze solid once the sun went down and I was in the same boat. Kind of annoying. We don't get too much snow here in Delaware anymore so shouldn't be a huge problem.
