I was replacing the roof rails on my sr5, to the arb roof rack. Very simple I know. But I got to the last bolt and I broke it off inside the housing. I tried using an extractor kit, but no luck because the housing seems to glide up and down. Anyone know what I can do? I think I need to get into the ceiling of the interior and replace that whole thing. Any have a part number for it? Any help would be thankful.

Not sure how this works on the 6th gen, but on my 4th gen these two bolts would be screwed on to a common backing plate. In other words, if you put a bolt in the other hole you might be able to stabilize the broken bolt enough to start getting it out.

If that doesn't work, $30 on techinfo.toyota.com will show you how to remove the roof headlining assembly in 80 easy steps!

Wish you the best of luck.

I read a thread on Reddit a while back and someone had to recover the hardware from the inside. It was a gen5 though.

What I recall was the only partially dropped the headliner to recover the hardware with a magnet.

Not sure if this would be easier than removing the headliner, but if you have access to a welder, you could tack something to the broke bolt and try to back it out again.

I’ve always had the best lock tapping into bolts with a metal bit and a reverse threaded bolt (it gets snug and the broken bolt gets loose).

In this situation I’d be so worried about the roof integrity… I’d likely focus on pulling the headliner and advancing the hardware from the inside.

Such a bummer.

Thanks guys. I was able to find the part. And I could easily slip my hand into the headliner to replace it. So it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. Just waiting on the part now.
