Gotta say goodbye to my Gen 6

you're dumping the 6th gen for a 5th gen + super/awesome/hybrid/unobtanium/ultra efficient commuter? Won't the total cost of the commuter + 5th gen wipe out any difference from the 6th gen? The 5th is gonna get way worse mgp than the 6th. The commuter will help, but enough to offset the opportunity cost of flipping the 6th into something else?

5th gen will be the second car. Might even look at a cheap lease. Pretty much kids to school and volleyball tournaments on the weekend. Very limited miles. Commuter beater car will drive 600kms a week at least. I can pick up a beater and 5th gen for almost what I can get in an after tax trade at a dealer and save 350-400/month in gas.

i think it’s clear it’s not only about the fuel cost, OP indicates they have buyers remorse w/the car payment, because they list reducing monthly car payment as one of the goals of this move, in addition to reducing fuel outlay. So best way to solve both is to get a cheaper car and a more efficient car.

I’m fine with my payment for the vehicle, I just don’t want to add another vehicle on top when I can keep the same payment and get two vehicles AND save on gas. New one is great - almost got stolen 2 weeks after I bought it and frankly afraid to stay in hotels in toronto again overnight with it and we spend a lot of weekends there for tournaments. I just don’t want to add another car payment on top of the current one when my wife is just starting out on her new career after being a stay at home mom for 13 years.
All about monthly output until she gets established.

For sure. I just know buyers remose and mpg chasing makes people do irrational things sometimes. Op said "I can pick up a beater and 5th gen for almost what I can get in an after tax trade at a dealer. That seems like a bad deal. If I were them, I would give up looking a 5th Gen 4runners. They hold their value so much it is just not worth it. Thats why I bought a 6th gen. Im not going to pay 35-40k for a used dinosaur that is slow and gets bad mpg lol.

5th gen prices are crazy the more I look. 50k plus for vehicles with close to 75k on them. Cheaper for me to drop this off, lease a new SR5 and buy a 2 year old Prius or Corolla hybrid. And for less than I’m paying now.

Older gen is on the backburner, and it would only be driven on weekends to tourneys. For not going to focus on a prius or corolla or camry for her to commute in. My lease is up on my vehicle so I'll just get something bigger. Mileage is less important since I work from home and the kids school is a 2 minute drive.

Your original post and reason for getting rid of the 6th gen is fuel mileage but this post mileage is less important....odd

chasing mpg but moving from a 6th gen to a 5th gen seems... unrealistic. Unless, the 5th gen sits forever and gathers dust while the beater super uber mpg queen takes the brunt of the travel duties. Still, sounds like a bad deal. Keep the 6th gen, get a super cheap beater with relatively good mpg numbers, IMO.

We were in a similar boat where we needed to find a more efficient commuter car. But Toyotas of any kind new or used are very hard to get in my region and we needed something with all wheel drive so Prius/camry/Corolla is all out. We had a line on a new rav4 but didn’t like the feel of the interior. Kind of felt like they went cheap on the inside.

Ended up getting one of the new Subaru crosstreks but the hybrid version. We’ve been super happy with it. Saving a lot in gas. (Previously we were leasing an EV but couldn’t spring for a new lease this time around.)

Idk if any of that is helpful but we were happy where we landed. And I get to keep my SR5!
