So, embargo lifted, reviews posted. What's the verdict on the new modernized, updated, more powerful, more efficient, more technology and safety feature laden 6th gen? Yeah, it cost more, what doesn't? Anyways, what's the word on the street?

Thanks, it's an interesting list.

I quickly scanned most of the reviews to look for comments about road performance, particularly noise. There were very few comments on that - mostly folks doing off road stuff, that's fair, a lot of owners love to do that, however not all of us. Living on the east coast, my off roading is mostly navigating the road potholes, speed humps and climbing icy hills.

My interest is in the new TRD Sport and Premium versions. We have a TRD Sport 5th gen and love its general performance. I have driven the Tacoma TRD Sport and the Landcruiser 1958 to get impressions of the 4-banger noise and performance on the road, which is where we use our vehicle most of the time.

Frankly, I was not impressed about the noise, I have a good ear for engines and know the difference between valve train and Turbo noises. Any model with no hood insulation and little to no firewall insulation has a sound not appealing to all. If the off roaders want noise that's fine by me, but limit that to OR versions.

I will reserve judgment for test driving the 4R TRD Sport and Premium versions, but you shouldn't have to go for Limited or Platinum just to have sound levels similar to the "old antiquated" 6.

PS: Power was good for the 4 bangers, but super with the extra Hp and torque of the Hybrid. Some reviews pointed out no fuel improvement for Hybrid because of the extra weight - I guess we shall see on road.

Come on driving press, not everyone goes off road in their 4R's or purchases purely based on external looks (although the 6th looks great) let's see driving on rural roads, freeways and then stop/go traffic and see if you still like the noise and shifting.

I don't love this reviewer but his drive is all on-road. It is a Platinum though so I don't know if that helps.

I just watched Doug Demuros review. Does anyone know if the driver side inside door trim have the hidden flashlight on all trims or just the Trail Hunter?

This is an on-road review. Platinum trim with extra sound deadening / insultion (the higher trims and Premium also have rubber stripping on the front edge of the rear door to reduce wind noise).

This reviewer wasn't so keen on engine sound either, for sure If I could afford the Lexus GX Premium 6 with hybrid would be my preference. In other reviews, the Limited iForce max was considered fairly quiet but must have the moon roof and therefore the lost internal headroom.

Fingers crossed for my TRD Sport test drives when possible.

In Toyota's 4Runner configurator under "Storage" in the Options section, they list several variations to add including a multi tool, storage case and boot brush(?) in addition to the LED light.

From watching the videos on my preferred trim, the Platinum, I know that the Platinum does have the cool hidden flashlight as well. Not sure on the other trims. If it's on the Trail Hunter and the Platinum I'm sure it's on the Pro. Not sure of the lower trims.

Has anybody watched all of the videos? Have any trends emerged?

Most of the videos I watched called out engine noise, and little else other than price as negatives.
