Front Brake Squeal Noise Fix - official TSB brakes fix! (TSB-0046-25)

Did you drop off your truck at the dealer and have them recreate the noise or you have it on video and show it to them? or just tell them you have it without the proof and they will replace it because of the TSB?

I had an appointment last Thursday for the tech to diagnose/run tests on a steering shaft issue (per Toyota corporate). Read about the TSB on Monday and called to add it to my appointment. No video or proof, but they could easily replicate it when they were testing for the steering issue. They replaced without question, and they luckily had the parts on hand. Was completed the next morning (had to drop off the truck overnight).

I said something along the lines of, “I backed out of a parking spot after a grocery run, and the entire parking lot stopped in their tracks and stared”, and “it sounded like a freight train screeching to a halt.”

Sad part is that this does not cover rotors. Pads are bedded to rotors which both mating surfaces are worn and mated together. Thats why when doing brakes the rotors are resurfaced or replaced. Other TSB's for other vehicles you change the rotor also. Brake feel and stopping power will be affected if the rotors are not resurfaced or replaced.

So to those who did get the TSB done. Did your brakes feel the same after? Did the noise go away?

Yep, surprising the TSB doesn't at least say to run a die grinder with an abrasive pad over the entire rotor surface in case there's glaze. But given how few miles most of these 4runners will have, it's probably not surprising that wholesale replacement of rotors was not included.

Thanks for posting this, mine seemed fine until about 500 mi ago, maybe more. Then, the squeaking started in reverse.

WD40 on the rotor works wonders as well!

If I were you, drive on your current ones a dn wait so you can get brand new pads right before your warranty is up.

- I chatted with the dealer about it during the last service and they knew about it and were waiting for solutions. Apparently some people were loosing their minds over it like marbles lost type.... I told them no stress on my part and let's just get it taken cared of when parts are available.

Oh I do. A slight steep driveway too... and Its no fun, but I'm not stressing over it. Fortunately for my neighbors it is not at the crack of dawn.

Just as a hunch, I decided back out of the driveway in 4WD, and I didn't need to brake as much, and also no noise.

Anyone have any idea, mechanically speaking, why the squeal only happens in reverse? Mine were quiet until I hit about 400 miles, then they started making noise. Is the grain pattern on the rotor what makes this only happen in reverse? Weird. Another data point, my 2006 Tacoma has been doing this for years.

It’s not just reverse although the majority of the time that’s when you hear it. It happens to me braking going forward but mostly if I been rolling slow for a few like through a parking lot.

Brought mine in today because of this TSB, and they actually had the parts on hand. After half a year of dreading backing out of the garage in the morning, I can finally say the squeal is gone (hopefully for good). Feels amazing.

dude mine told me I had to leave the car there for a couple of days so they can recreate the noise. If it doesn’t make the noise for them they won’t repair it.

That's real BS on their part. As if we are bringing in our vehicle and causing an inconvenience for ourselves just in an effort to get some shims and a little grease. I'm gonna film mine today just in case. I'm assuming they won't be able to recreate it on warm brakes when I roll in.
