I’m planning two international road trips, one to Canada and another to Mexico, starting from Texas.
I’m curious if the Drive Connect GPS will function outside the US, as it relies on the AT&T network.
Also, I recall that the 5th generation has a Weather app that retrieves live data from HD radio, which was incredibly helpful for me in remote areas of UT/AZ when there were no cell reception and flash flood was approaching.

The Toyota nav worked seamlessly for me driving to Vancouver, British Columbia.

No idea about Mexico.

I don't think there's a weather app on the 6th gen infotainment system, at least I haven't seen one.

No weather radio that I can see. Definitely nice to have for long drives. My X5 has one and I certainly used it.

GPS itself is not data driven, so always works everywhere. I never use the vehicle mapping feature though, as my phone does a perfectly good job of it and connects well with Android Auto, and costs me nothing extra. On Google Maps and others, and I expect Apple iWhatever, you can download maps for the areas you are going so they work offline--no data connection needed once they are downloaded.

Get the Storm Radar app from the Weather Channel. It works with Car Play.
out of cell phone range is common. out of weather radio range is impossible*

*deep inside box canyons might have no reception

That's a major issue with the Toyota (and others) setup. Everything is funneled through data services. What happened to basic onboard navigation? Sell the premium cloud services and real time maps, etc. with a subscription, but provide basic features as part of the vehicle. A weather radio function wouldn't cost much either, but it's a game of nickels and dimes, not dollars.

You mean off line, local data based nav? I haven't seen that in a new car in ages. I've had cars with DVD or SD card based nav in the past, last one I had was a 2014 Ford.

Been renting quite a few cars this year, both domestically and internationally. They all had online nav.

The 2026 BMW X5 I considered did. As did all the other BMWs with OS 8.5 anyway. Real time data required ConnectedDrive, but POI search, POI categories, map data, dynamic off-route rerouting, enter address, search along route, etc. all standard, no subscription. Basic navigation feature.
