Disable Auto Shut-down if you don't push the Ignition Button after a Remote Start

Does this ever happen to you... You use the app or triple-click/hold on the key fob to remote start your 4runner (probably because you wanted it running but also wanted to keep the doors locked), then you hop in the vehicle and before you remember to push the ignition button you try to shift into gear and the engine shuts down, then you try to restart it but Toyota makes you wait a few more seconds just to rub it in. It's like your mom scolding you for trying to take a cookie before they cool off from the oven and then making you wait extra long so the lesson sinks in.

I understand a remote start doesn't engage the full system (and why), but is there really a reason that the whole thing has to shut down just because we forgot to hit the button? Maybe there could just be a chime along with a message on the nice big display (instead of the barely noticeable one on the dash cluster), or a voice recording in my mother's voice that says "not until you wash your hands" or something.

We can't put the vehicle in gear and drive off without pushing the button first anyway, so why the extra hand slap Toyota?

Has anyone figured out how to disable this full shut-down?

@ifunlisted No but if you look at the bottom left on the dash with will say "Ready" in green meaning your engine is on. Took me a little bit to make it muscle memory but now I always look there to make sure my vehicle is on before putting it in drive. Pretty sure that ls only for the hybrid motors.

its a security issue. its to ensure the fob or digital key is nearby so you cant just break the window and drive off.

pushing the button re-validates that the fob/digital key is in the vehicle.

Yep, I'm just real slow on the memory part, ha!! I have clients in my vehicle a lot so I try to get the interior temp comfortable on our way to the car. I'm usually talking or something as we climb in and then I just step on the brake and grab the gear shift... and then of course everything shuts down and the clients look at me like I just learned how to drive:/

Hey JR! Yeah, I understand the reasoning behind it all. I'm just wondering why the engine has to shut completely off and pause the day when all of the above is accomplished whether the engine is running or not. You can still have the anti-theft feature with the engine running because the gear shift is locked. You can still re-validate that the fob is in the vehicle without turning the vehicle off. By design, you should absolutely still have to push the button, but maybe give slow guys like me a beep or more visible message instead of turning the engine off and starting from scratch. Certainly not a major world issue.

dont mind the paraphrasing / simplified explaination below ...

its just the way toyota is leary about change. they are more strict about canbus security than normal and how the fob handshakes with the main brains of the vehicle.

if i remember correctly, the ecu rolls the code everytime you grab the handle between the last event and when you grab the handle, in this case the remote start.

the old way (which was in place for 10-15 yrs since it was on my 2014 limited) was that the engine would shut off on door handle unlock since the code that started the vehicle is reset and re validated when you grab the handle to unlock.

all toyota did was move the verification at ignition button press to keep the engine running after remote start.

trust me what we have now is slightly better than the old way and they just recently allowed the engine to keep running after opening the door with TSS 3.0.

the current tundra is i think the last old TSS system to have the engine die on door unlock (TSS 2.5).

people are hoping they update the TSS to 3.0 on the mid cycle refresh on the tundra.

and the new rav4 has TSS 4.0 which adds the event recorder to all the 360 view camera's, like tesla has.

what i would really like to see is toyota incorporate the turn signal camera view like hyunai has in the palisade. since we have a full digital MID screen that would be somewhat easy to implement.

Ok so you missed the start button and signaled a shutdown. Open and close door will reset things much faster so you can restart much quicker. I feel as though I'm a pro at this method unfortunately.
