Dealer is going to block the snorkel on our Trailhunter before we take delivery.

The dealership installed the parts they thought would work. During a test drive the car threw an error code so they had to remove the modification.

Try one of these, it does help.

Remove the two phillps head screws on the protective louvered screen/grille and then it'll pop right out when you pull on it. Push your sponge inside the snorkel tube about 1–2 inches down so it can't be seen but not so deep that you can’t remove it if needed. The sponge should fit snugly to avoid being sucked into the intake or falling out. Snap the louvered grill back in and put the little retaining screws back in and voila!

It's not that loud to start with, and hardly noticeable if the windows are up. Putting a sponge in there is restricting the airflow and probably voiding your warranty.

I was a helicopter mechanic for 28 years. I guarantee that you are blocking the airflow. That type of sponge is made form polyurethane foam. As that type of sponge ages they disintegrate into little pieces. Those pieces are going to get sucked into the engine. Not good.

airflow passes around the edges of a sponge plug inside the snorkel because the sponge is porous and not a perfect seal. it fits snugly but does not block the entire intake.

a dense closed-cell foam plug will not break down or shed fragments, nor enter the engine air stream.

even you purposely sprinkled sponge residue in there, the engine air filter would trap the particles protecting the engine the same as any other dust and debris.

at the same time it shouldn't just be forgotten and left to rot in there forever either.

but suit yourself.

Well just having the snorkel you lose 3 horsepower over the non-sorkel models. Wonder how much a silly sponge knocks that down further.

I just don't understand your insistence that I shove a sponge in my snorkel. Sounds a little weird. If you have a question about helicopter repair bring your checkbook. I'm not cheap. I will suit myself. Thanks.
