I was a helicopter mechanic for 28 years. I guarantee that you are blocking the airflow. That type of sponge is made form polyurethane foam. As that type of sponge ages they disintegrate into little pieces. Those pieces are going to get sucked into the engine. Not good.

I am not really worried about the cost so much as avoiding any warranty problems in the future. They won't be able to deny any warranty claim based on blocking the snorkel as they are the ones doing the modification.
