The locking dif can absolutely get you out of situations ATRAC won't. There are many videos showing this very thing and it has gotten me out of situations. Having a locking front even more help and a lot of guys install that too as it is not a stock option.

I have two toyotas with lockers and one without
-no ATRAC, 4WD/AWD/locker
-ATRAC, 4WD/locker
-ATRAC, 4WD/no locker

and a remote cabin up an abandoned and steep logging road in Maine
just sayin I know from my experience no one really needs a
locker if you have ATRAC
and if you do need one, you already know you do

and I ain't saying lockers are bad or anything, it's just a way
to save loot on a new rig if you skip a locker that is all

ATRAC is a very useful tool for sure. Mitigating power management on an open differential using brakes on the non traction wheel works. But sometimes a locking dif is the extra to get you up the hill. These 2 videos show how to use it and how it works. They actually show ATRAC not being able to get the job done. He locked the 2 diff's, (he had an after market front) and go where the ATRAC could not. The other video incorporates the MTS system, the differences, when and how to use one or the other settings and a few odd quirks to the 2 systems.

locker is absolutely not needed in mud when you have ATRAC...in fact in mud
a locker can bury you deeper, faster, than an open diff using ATRAC...because
when locked there is no ATRAC intelligence between the two rear tires

Experience/ Experiences may vary, but to say its not helpful is just not factual. A quick google search would prove otherwise (you tube videos etc. even using lockers in mud).

I'm not sure where her husband hunts, but an example would be taking powerline service trails to get to a spot....the trails can develop deep ruts from the heavier repair trucks that take these routes and if you happen to take a bad line and get caught up in the ruts and one of your wheels looses traction the locker would help in a situation like that.

The point is that even if you may not need it in most cases I would feel more comfortable having the option available especially considering I would be taking a 50K+ vehicle somewhere that recovery would be expensive if you don't have someone who could recover your vehicle and this isn't an aftermarket option that can easily be added.

I am sure you know all this, but will say as a reminder anyway:

With new you get a longer warranty. You know its past. I would want to save a fair amount of $$ to buy used rather than new, but would certainly consider a same-generation used one if it is a good deal. Have it checked by a good mechanic though.

What part of the country are you in? I am partial to Edmark Toyota in Nampa, Idaho. Bought multiple vehicles from them and got under MSRP on all of them.

Okay, I got a vehicle.
After spending the entire day reading forums, google docs (from here), reddit, facebook, driver reviews, I found a 2026 TRD offroad premium in underground with some options (sunroof) and haggled till we came to $4400 off the sticker.

I had built the model offered on the Toyota website and knew the sticker was spot on. They matched carvana's good price for trade and I'm happy. We'll pick up on Monday.



Thank you all for your help! I might have been able to get another thousand off if I flew somewhere but this dealer is 85 miles away so that's doable.

I think so too, but he is currently freaking out. These cars are SO pricey and he's only bought TWO trucks in the past 26 years. I handle most of the finances and keep him in the dark for this very reason. He literally gets sick to his stomach.

what you pay in price up front you will save in the long run on recalls, repairs and failed parts and resell if that ever happens.

i had a 2014 4R limited with 120k miles i traded in for my 25 4R and i still got 19k trade in

original price was 42k and i had it for 12 yrs, that came out to roughly 2k depreciation per year or 45% retention price

on avg thats about 5-15% better than most other brands after 10yrs and way less headaches with recalls/failures.

only thing that went bad was a oil sensor and the water pump failed 2 days after trade in (lucky me)

spark plugs lasted 106k, replaceds both axles brakes/rotors at 96k (oem pads lasted that long), brake fluid was still good at 106k (passed moisture test), replaced 3 diffs fluid at 85k, chemical flush of coolant system at 85k, replaced auxiliary belt at 96K

outside of the headlights and license plate lights (i replaced them with led's) all light bulbs still worked from the factory (none burnt out or blew)

i replaced all interior bulbs with leds from vleds and they still worked after 8 yrs (credit to vleds quality and $$$)

Congrats! Glad you found one you liked and are happy with! Your OP threw me a bit about the bad back and SR5! SR5 is arguably the smoothest driving of the bunch and I've had a spinal fusion. I think the 4R will serve you well. I use mine for everything I used to use a truck for...only difference is stuff stays clean and dry!!!

Yeah, he's had spinal fusion too and still a lot of pain. He's gonna miss having a truck, first time in gosh, 30 years he hasn't had one.

But he had a bunch of horses so there was a need. Now we live in a small neighborhood and not doing big ol' truck projects.
Hopefully it's 'tough guy' enough for him!
