Brake Pads changed for the 2nd time in 22,000 KM - normal?

Good day,

I had to change the brake pads in the 10,000 KM maintenance review, and now with 22,000 km the dealer is telling me that the brake pads needs to be changed again. I wanted to know if this is normal? I have a 4runner SR5 2025.

No that is not normal. If you're going ahead with their recommended pad replacement I'd ask to see the old ones. Take a look at how close the wear bar (squeeker indicator) is to the pad.

Pads should not be wearing out that quickly so it could be excessive hard braking on your end or unnecessary service the dealer is trying to push on you. If your brake pads have been worn down to the wear bar you should have heard a high pitched squeeking noise while braking. Start a conversation with your dealer.

I've heard the auto braking tech in these cars can wear out your brakes quicker so I disabled it. I also hate when it slows down for me. I'd check into that if you haven't disabled that already.

That seems unusual. They said my pads were in green at 5000 miles (8000km) so I would say I would not need them now at around 7500 mile, they certainly have not hit wear bars.

You can see if its auto braking so you should have a idea of how much extra it is braking. I have it on and I really don't think it bakes that much more than I should. It is doing it earlier than I would but I would also potentially need to brake harder if it had not auto braked.

The auto braking is an intervention, in place of times when you should've already been braking and I don't see how it could possibly add any additional wear, even given any false events. I certainly don't notice it randomly or excessively slowing me down.

I wonder if the dealer is proposing a break replacement due to the TSB for break squealing. I doubt it.

i have been waiting 3 months for the dealer to get the parts! Maybe all the break parts are being sent to the OP’s dealer to do unneded work

wouldn’t a reputable dealer question the need to replace at low mileage and investigate the cause of wear?
