The last few Toyota's I've owned make a noise like its engaging the parking brake when you put in it P. I always wondered why there was a button for it if it did it automatically.

I've noticed that automatic does sound like it engages. But after shutdown, pulling up on the parking brake lever sounds like a second engagement.

Wonder what the difference is ? 🤷‍♂️

I use the auto parking brake. I know there is a button but why would you use that?

If I stop, hear the PB activate, what would pressing or pulling the switch do?

i guess if normal brakes fail, you can use to button carefully to slow the car???

very confusing statement in the manual shown above. Would like to know best practices.

The button exists because you can disable the automatic function and you still need to be able to operate the brake.

the parking brake engages hard. there is no feathering option

at speed it's hard braking until skid detect, then max braking w/o skid if system
can control it...but for sure you'll be slowing down as fast as possible...it is a violent action

go ahead and roll in a parking lot at 3-4 mph, pull that button up, find out what it does, it'll
be an eye opener

it cannot be feathered. it's on/off and at low speeds will skid

Pulling a Toyota electronic parking brake (EPB) switch at highway speeds triggers a controlled emergency stop rather than locking the rear wheels. The vehicle will decelerate firmly using the ABS system to maintain stability, accompanied by a warning buzzer, illuminated brake lights, and a "grinding" sound as the rear brakes engage.

I agree. I used the switch to disable the automatic parking brake in the winter when snow and ice were building up for days without the temps getting above freezing to avoid issues. I could have manually used the switch to enable the brake if needed. After the weather improved, I re-enabled the auto parking brake to make sure it is being exercised and used as designed.
