Excellent. Thank you for the write up. Can’t wait to see what you think of the gap.View attachment 12745 View attachment 12746
Ok the day I’ve been waiting for. Here’s what I think ….
Quality: 9/10. Nothing is perfect and the only thing I would want and could see improving on is sealing the wood with sealant to waterproof it and make it smoother but that’s just me. The boards themselves are nice and straight and the material as best I can tell is great.
Assembly: 9.5/10. It’s a VERY tight fit. I needed a rubber mallet to smash it in. Now personally I can’t stand rattling and I don’t want a board, in the hopefully never event that I get into a crash, becoming a guillotine so I’m kinda glad the fit is so tight. However it is a slight pain so not a perfect 10. Other than that you can’t ask for an easier assembly. I really love simple effective design and engineering.
Usability: ??/10. Can’t say yet too early. BIG WARNING though: There is a gap. This is stated on the store page and in my OP. What I didn’t realize was the gap is vertical not horizontal like I had assumed. You can see it in the pic. It’s about 1”. What this does though is allow use of the seats normally otherwise the seats would likely not be able to recline at all.
With a thick enough mattress I bet you wouldn’t feel it. I have a 4” thick trifold I need to test and will report back. I have also seen a hack online where someone took one of the closed cell foam folding camping pads and bridged the gap on a similar product.
$729 plus shipping is INSANE for this. You can get either birch or bamboo![]()
and it’s not even leveled with the folded down seats ?. Sleeping on that lip is going to suck regardless of how thick your mattress is.$729 plus shipping is INSANE for this.
Insanely ridiculous price for a couple of plywood cut to fit and stands.$729 plus shipping is INSANE for this.
So you have to get in from the 2nd row door and crawl over - same with getting out right? There's no release latch on inside of the rear hatch? That is for those of us who did not get the fancy motorized hatch closing feature.Thought I would add to this thread as I purchased the bambed for my ORP Hybrid with the recommended Luno Mattresses. I used it on a camping trip this weekend.
Shipping for both was within a week or two (I live on the west coast and I think both originated from CA). Altogether with tax I think it was around $1100 for both.
Set up for the bambed was very quick and simple, but thats because you are paying $600 for 4 pieces of wood. Its a steep price for something so simple (I dont have the skills to fabricate something). I will say unlike some reviews I've seen, the fit was not "snug". There were small gaps between the the platform and the sides of the car, and the floor created by having the seats folded down with the platform was level(ish). But because of the loose fit the rattle coming from the platform from just driving on paved roads would drive you insane. They say you can leave the platform just installed all year round, but you would drive yourself insane.
On the plus side, the Luno was fantastic I got the Luno Air+Foam double mattress for the rear. It was very comfortable to sleep on, self inflated (you need toput about 10 good puffs into it to really inflate it fully, but self inflate gets you 90% of the way). I had my dog on the other side and I was not concerned about him piercing the mattress either. The only downside is that with the hybrid floor + the the thickness of the mattress leaves you with a pretty low ceiling but thats to be expected. I am 5 7 so there was plenty of room for me, but you can fit someone much taller than me in the back as well.
Overally, unless you are dying to use the car as shelter (as I was) I would avoid the bambed. If you think can build something yourself go for it, or wait for an alternative. The Luno is great definitely recommend that over a backpacking mattress. I know deepsleep made something for the 5th Gen, so maybe wait for their equivalent for the 6th gen.
