Hi All,

I have a 6th gen Off Road Premium Hybrid with a 3/4 ARB roof rack (think trail hunter).

I have been looking to get a roof top box to add to my cargo capacity. My concern is this:

4Runner Roof dynamic weight limit: 165lbs
ARB roof rack: 50lbs
Yakima Rook Box: 50lbs

Does this really mean I can only put 65lbs in the box on top of the roof and drive safely? That is okay, but I was hoping it would be more than that. 65lbs is not much and far less than my Subaru Forester Wilderness (250lb weight limit).

Am I thinking about this correctly, or am I missing something?

Thanks all.

You are correct, though there are racks which can distribute the weight more effectively and increase the dynamic and static weight. My Trailhunter came with the same rack and I swapped it out for a Prinsu standard so I could mount a skycamp3 without worrying about the weight. It is frustrating that these vehicles would come with racks installed that are not all that useful.

Yea, I was hoping not to have to change the rack but... that might be the best option for us as well. I am not looking to put a tent on the top of the vehicle, instead I generally give the dog the trunk space and pack a roof rack. I guess that would work for short and light trips...

What makes the Prinsu different? How can it accommodate more weight?

I am not an expert so hopefully somebody more knowledgeable can chime in, but I believe the crossbars are stronger and the rack extends the full length of the 4R so it better distributes the weight that the roof can handle.
