This is one of those “you do you” topics. There are a lot of strong opinions and superstitions out there but very little to no empirical evidence, particularly when it comes to the 6th gen 4Runner specifically.

The manual says to stay at or above 87. Do that and you’re good!

well i ran 87 octane in my 2014 4R limited since day one. here are my stats over 116k miles

also attached is the spark plugs i replaced at 106k miles (those are the oem plugs that came with the 2014 4R when i bought my limited)

What I got from this is gas costs twice as much in California than ND.

I generally only use Tier 1 gas. Costco primarily.
Not only is Costco gas Tier 1, but it is also much cheaper than the gas stations around me. On top of that you get points/rewards for using it so by the end of the year my rebate check from Costco more than pays for the membership just by buying gas!

Yeah, before the 7% discount at Costco the difference in 85 and 91 octane here is like 60 cents.

Running 85 at altitude gives noticeably worse performance.
