People have been using tubular sliders forever without issue. I feel like top plates are more of a recent phenomenon as people want more of a step than a slider. I like the design of these as they sit higher under the door sills than many comparable offerings. I was thinking the 10 degree with the half plate if I hadn’t gotten a deal on a Trailhunter with the factory skids (also without a top plate, but not as much open area).

I'm not trying to argue with anyone or saying anything bad about these sliders, and yes, tubular sliders have been around and yes they've been creating damage and these have large openings, I have personally seen more than one branch, stick, pipe, whatever get caught up in those or similar openings and jam against the door panel doing damage. Only wanted to help prevent anyone from finding that out for themselves. You want to reassure him that won't happen, that's on you.

I agree and have run into similar situations. I'm sure this response will get some non-positive feedback as I am not comparing apples to apples, but I feel it relates.

I frequently drive off payment, but I don't do any major off-roading. I had the aluminum OEM predator steps on my 21' ORP (I know those aren't sliders! - bare with me). I spend time on family property with a number of trails / roads that cross large power lines. After the utility company came through and cleaned the overgrown power lines (by essentially using a crazy all terrain drivable cutting, chipping, mowing, & mulching machine) there was a lot of small debris left behind on the roads we've used for years to cross those lines.

None of the remaining debris was large. Twigs & small branches less than 3 feet long & less than 2 inches in diameter. Everything else was essentially mulch which was weird to walk on as it was deep. On more than one occasion I ended up with sticks in the predator step openings when crossing those power lines. Fortunately, I always drove slow and stopped to check / remove any debris and never did any visible damage. My cousin wasn't so lucky in his 24" Taco with the same predator steps. He caught a branch in the step which snapped back and made contact resulting in some damage to the rocker and rear passenger side door. Plus the aluminum step was bent up slightly.

Please don't waste your time explaining to me that those steps aren't rockers and aren't smart for true off-roading. I completely understand and agree with that! The point I am trying to make (which has been made, but obviously contested) is there are situations where something can get lodged into openings in running boards or sliders (depending on the design) that can cause damage. While still not a rocker, the TRD OR premium running boards would not have this issue as they don't have a hoop / opening. No different from rockers w/ top plates (vs open tubes).

Obviously - This is just my experience. For those of you out west ripping the rocks & sand up, it probably isn't a major concern. It's all about your usage and needs and we all have our own experiences.

I just think it’s funny that someone is taking a brand new vehicle off-road and is worried about the possibility of sticks poking up through the rock sliders.

 I kinda think that's the whole point of buying protection, if I didn't care about damage I wouldn't have put all the protection on I did, could have saved a bunch of coin.

BTW, mine's over a year old, went fast.........

Sorry about the post highjack, I'm out...
