So I'm right at 24 hours into the OTT Tune (@JustDSM) for my 25 ORP Hybrid and I will tell you that its BY FAR WORTH IT.

To answer most questions:
  • YES its worth it.
  • It took about 25 minutes - Other tunes of older models were way faster
  • Regular Mode feels like sport mode now
  • Sport Mode feels WAY BETTER now.
But... What I find to be the absolute BEST THING about it is the new transmission shifting. I didnt realize this could run so smooth. The 4runner is almost like a completely different car now. Faster, Smoother, Better.

The clunky first shift or two that many of us complain about in the morning is completely gone. The gear searching...Gone. The slow turbo lag...gone.

Don't get me wrong. You arent driving a supercharged V8 by any means, but this is by far worth the upgrade, but the car is simply faster and better.

Honestly, that little bit of refinement is simply how the truck should have come from the factory which disappoints me in Toyota

I highly recommend this

I’m in the non-hybrid and echoing everything you’re saying. It’s so much smoother in shifting, and there’s no turbo lag. I’ll put this thing up against some V8s once I’m done with my build. Future enhancements include the intercooler and turbo inlet from SXTH Element. There was a rumor of a muffler or cat-back system from them too, so I might get that as well. Right now, it’s all about performance! It will be interesting to hook it up to a dyno to see just how many HP I get. Who said a 4Runner needs to be slow? This ain’t your grandpa’s first gen here! šŸ˜‚

How is Eco mode? Better shifts across all 3 modes? MPG loss there as well?
I do most of my driving in eco mode. The shifting benefits are in that mode as well. Sport is where you will really feel the performance gains!

Some say they get better fuel mileage in normal or even sport. I’ve tried them all, and eco works best for me. If I’m in sport though, my driving style suits that mode! šŸ˜‚

Been going back and forth with Midwest Yota today on Messenger. Answering on Christmas! The graph of torque and hp gains looks to essentially parallel stock tune but an extra 35 ft lb on torque. Still nervous about voiding warranty. Paid for extended due to turbos and all the electronics

Talk to your OTT tuning representative. Mine shared that he’s never had to reverse a tune for a customer, and he’s done thousands. If anything goes sideways on you, the tune can be removed. The fact OTT is nationwide and has done hundreds of thousands of tunes also gives me peace of mind.

What if I have a drivetrain issue that’s unrelated… don’t want to give Toyota a reason to claim warranty is voided…

had to take my TH in at 95 miles w a hybrid malfunction… not convinced it won’t come back…

Alright, talk to me like I'm five years old and eating crayons because I know very little about this 'tuning'.
If these 'tunes' are so great and relatively simple to do (for the tuners) and they improve performance, then why doesn't Toyota just do this in the production phase?

the green crayons are not ripe, the red ones taste like strawberry.

re. the OTT, this is what it says on their FAQ:

Will my vehicle pass California smog?

NEW! Our 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma 3.5L V6 calibration is now SEMA CE & CARB Executive Order #D-883.

OTT does not alter and/or modify emissions controls, readiness monitors, or make any other changes that would constitute tampering with federally mandated emissions equipment.

Other platforms are currently CARB Pending.

So basically the Gen6 4Runner and Gen5 Tacos have not been certified as compliant. Does this matter? Well, further down in the FAQ:

Can the dealer detect my tune?

The ECU ID of your vehicle will remain stock, but the CVN number will be changed. Any CVN mismatch will alert the dealer or emissions station that the EU has been modified.

So at the moment it is not smog compliant - which is why Toyota does not do this from the factory - and it can be detected.

And regarding warranty they say:

That said, if you are concerned about your vehicle's warranty, we suggest you refrain from tuning your vehicle.

Which is a fair enough statement. No-one is forcing you to get the tune…

Thanks. Good info on the crayons. :) I think I'll pass. I'm plenty happy with my 4Runner out of the box when I smash the gas pedal, especially in Sport mode. I don't want to mess with the warranty at all. Maybe I'll revisit the idea at 36,000 miles.

Really want to do the tune but warranty on new vehicle is holding me back. Would like to drive one with the tune to get over the hump
