I'm getting a Zeon 10-S installed in my Greenlane bumper in a few weeks and came across this. I'm curious if anyone knows, is the battery potentially weaker because you have a hybrid? I have a gas ORP and wondering if I'll run into the same issue.

Unfortunately you will have the same issue. The battery toyota puts in the truck from factory is meant to crank a tiny 4 cylinder engine, your winch will draw substantially more amps then the factory battery is meant for.

You will need a extremely high quality AGM ment for high cranking amps. After i upgraded iv had no issues, winched several times now and am very happy with the performance

Gotcha, thanks. I'm glad I'm finding this now. I always test recovery gear before hand, but just practicing in a small ditch where I'm not actually stuck might not have had enough draw to trigger the cutout. Wouldn't be fun to find out in a real situation!

Do you have the AUX switches? I'd be curious if the alternator that comes with the AUX switches helps mitigate the lack of power when winching.

Considering the alternator, I have a few observations that can be reasonably separated from theory:

1) Toyota installs at least a 130A alternator on the hybrid configuration associated with the factory auxiliary switch circuit.

2) The auxiliary 12VDC circuits materially increases the amount of 12VDC load.

3) I've been monitoring an “Alternator Current” via OBD2, and in the periods I've observed it, I've seen only 0.0A. I can't confirm whether that PID is valid, so that's an observation rather than proof that the alternator was actually producing zero output.

4) The hybrid 4Runner depends on a healthy 12VDC electrical system, even though its normal source of operating 12VDC power is the HV/DC-DC system.

My hypothesis from an engineering standpoint, it is likely that Toyota decided an increased margin for the 12VDC system was required given that the potential load on it was significantly increased by installing the auxiliary switches. Through a number of voltage and current sensors in the 12VDC system, very likely specifically monitoring the auxiliary 12VDC circuit and among others, alternator output is controlled as is necessary to maintain a healthy 12VDC system and battery in order to ensure the hybrid HV/DC-DC system and vehicle remain operational when 12VDC load exceeds a predetermined level.

What size battery do we have (2026 Trailhunter), and what AGM are you guys running? I've been runing my ARB Fridge and it kills the battery within a day. If any of you know if a thin (and I mean like 1/2" thin) solar panel that could be attached to my ARB roof rack where it's so low and clean no one really knows it's up there, I'd take the suggestion. Just to keep my battery topped off. I have a hood solar panel on my JL and on really sunny days, it puts out about 2.5 amps, which is about the draw of the ARB Fridge. Thoughts?
