Just an average guy wanting to beef up my TRD Sport Premium a little....

Hello 4Runner lovers out there; of all kinds, from stuck in the mud with a big grin on your face, to just loving your daily commute in your sturdy, utilitarian truck you know will serve you for many years. Personally, I'm more on the utilitarian side, early 60's and just love the way the 4Runner looks from every angle - even the front air dam. What a beautiful piece of engineering!

Anyway, I've seen so many mods that are very interesting like downsizing 20" wheels to 17's, and increasing from 33" tires all the way up to 37". Very cool, but for the average 4runner lover out there who doesn't want to mess with steering components and such, can someone share some mild mods to make the truck look a little beefier? I have the standard OEM 20" TRD aluminum wheels that look nice (but only 8' wide) and the dealer threw on some 265/50R 20 Nitto ridge grapplers which really changed to look of the truck much to my liking.

Here's by mod question, and let me first say that I do not want to lift the truck - its tall enough for me to get into it the way it is. I would like some really cool 20x9 wheels, maybe even 20x10's so that I can put on some Nitto Ridge Grappler 285/60R 20's. I may do a cold air intake and exhaust once the warranty is expired, but I need help in determining the widest 20" wheel I can safely put on the stock 4Runner and the largest tire for the recommended wheel. My ride looks pretty good right now, I just want a bit more stance and tire width. Can you help please?

The widest acceptable wheel depends on offset almost as much as the width itself. How much poke are you looking to get?

Thanks for the response. I’d say no more than 2-3 inches past the fender flare. I should have taken a picture of the truck from the front or rear to get a better idea of what would be attractive for what most will consider a stock truck. The ridge grapplers look pretty wide as they are but I think the rim width at 8” is a bit too narrow for the tires they put on the truck. This additional picture may give you a better idea of how wide the stance is right now. Thanks.

At 2-3" past the flare, you're going to find yourself cutting to get those to not contact at full lock since you don't want to lift it.

I have the Sport Premium as well. Just get the 18" Pro wheels and you'll be set. No lift or mod required.

Hi There! Yes, the ruck will be higher with more tire but nothing close to a lift and then there's the warranty I don't want to void. I checked my tires and currently have 275 50R 20's installed. I'm thinking maybe 285 55 20's or 285 60 20's. Just a bit more aggressive look. I had a 5th gen 4runner and it rode like a boat on the highway, winds buffeting the car, etc., but the 6th gen is confident and smooth and I don't want to lose that.

BonRunner - your truck is SICK!! That's exactly what I am seeing in my mind! A mean looking 4Runner that can do some hard work when needed, but look bad a$$ the rest of the time. I like the micro-squatted look. I'm saving a pic of your ride for inspiration. Thanks!

Lots of variables and choices, but if you want to stick with 20" wheels I think its helpful to look at the spec sheet for your desired tires: Nitto Ridge Grappler Specs 20" wheels
You need to keep several things in mind:
Do you want to fit a matching tire as a spare? Looks like folks have fit tires with diameter up to 33.6", but 285s might hang too low for your taste & use case. (the LT285/60 is 33.7" - might fit in spare slot but it will be tight)
Do you want to move up to LT/Load E from SL (standard load) - implication is tire weight vs. durability. You only really need Load E for rock crawling or heavy loading/towing. I note that the 285/60R20s you mention only come in Load E rating and weigh 61.6#

I think for your objectives of 20" wheel and Nitto RG, focused on looks (not off-roading) the sweet spot might be 275/60R20: 32.99" dia (slightly bigger than stock off-road trims (PRO, TRD OR, THunter) 32.6"), will fit in spare slot, weight 42.2#. Can fit on your current wheels.

If you go for different wheels and increase the diameter and width of the tires, be sensitive to offset. Your stock is +55. With the 275/60R20 you would likely be safe from rubbing with something as low as +20 (which is what the TRD PRO wheels are). But for bigger tires than that you will want to stay closer to stock offset.
If you plan on new wheels anyway and you don't care about a matching spare - or are OK with it hanging low - the SL 305/55R20 is an interesting choice. Requires 8.5-11" wheel.
(BTW - I'll bet your desired LT285/60R20 will fit on your stock wheel, but the wheel IS .5" below approved rim width range.)

MikeD - thank you for your kind reply. Lots of good info. I don't see myself taking my truck off road much other than to circulate the gearbox/trans fluid. Its more of a hobby vehicle for me to detail on weekends and take a drive on a nice day. Once the warranty is up though, I would like to test out a cold air intake that provides OEM level filter protection and an exhaust system.
