Advertised price included $699 doc fee. They added it back on at the dealership.

Hello, this is my first post.

Local dealerships website clearly advertised “*Smart price includes $699 Doc fee & $5 Title Prep Fee” Yes there is an asterisk. No fine print available online.

I negotiated price over the phone telling dealer that I needed a 7% discount to buy a vehicle from him. After a couple back and fourths he agreed. I arrived at dealer to finalize paper work and sure enough the listed price was reduced by 7% however on the quote sheet he had added the $699 & $5 as a line item. I pointed out the discrepancy and he said “they don’t include that in discounted, negotiated price”.

Can I insist on him taking it off? After all, the discount of 7% was applied to the advertised price which “included the $699 Doc fee & title prep fee $5.

Not only that, but on their website they advertised “$1,000 in Trade Assistance with any New Toyota”. Again, when I got to the dealership and presented that to them they wouldn’t allow it. For the same reason as above.

You can't force him to do jack squat. His standpoint is that what they're offering is 7% off, before all taxes and fees, eligible for no additional $ off.

Sounds like the quote sheet is the first time you're seeing the whole deal in writing, so it's not like you have a contract with them that it will be 7% off + $699 fees off + $1000 off, or something

Generally speaking, unless you're negotiating OTD price, you're negotiating sale price of the vehicle, exclusive of taxes & fees. 7% off is a decent deal IMO, especially for the more desirable trims/option packages.

You can insist on anything you want. Whether you will get what you want depends. If you think you can find a better deal elsewhere and are willing to put in the legwork walk away. If not, then buy it.

When I was shopping everything I was seeing is the doc fee is non-negotiable in most cases as it isn't a taxable item and is required by most, if not all, states. The fee amount changes per area. Mine was only $225. If you really got 7% off I wouldn't let the doc fee break the deal if it were me.

No, I’m still going to buy it, but in my area “western Massachusetts” most of the dealerships online clearly state “Price includes Doc fee”

I hear you. They try and get you any way possible. I drove 3 hours to get mine $4600 under MSRP and my person told me the price went up $500 to cover the extra few days for the payoff of my trade. Looked at the paperwork and they valued my trade $1000 under what we agreed and what CarMax offered. I had the sheet from CarMax in the glovebox, he altered the figures.

No, I’m still going to buy it. I’m just a little tired of Dealership always trying to get one over on you. The discount is actually 7.1% I was just rounding off.
