TLDR: 6th gen is dope. It climb rock and drive highway good. Speedometer may be off by 2mph. Need oil change.

I bought this 4Runner to convert it into a camping rig. So I put 10k miles on her for a test run over a 4 week span. 7k of it was over 11 days… (Started with 6 on the odometer) Florida to Montana and back. Hit 7 national parks. Got to drive it down shafer rd and around the canyon rim in canyonlands for a day and took potash rd back to Moab. Handled great!. Put my trust in the DAC going down the switch backs. Survived. And the 4wd crawled over the rocky terrain really well.

Highway driving was really smooth in my opinion and used the adaptive cruise control / lane tracing a good bit during those long stretches definitely made some of those 8-10 hour hauls easy. Also was really great when I did end up in stop n go traffic. Would blend with the flow of traffic quite well. Took a little bit to trust it. But it won me over.

Averaged 21.5 mpg over 7120 miles with 139 hours of drive time. Was averaging 24-25 mpg when it was straight highway though. Cruising at 75mph 90% of the time highway.

Quite happy with her she exceeded my expectations thus far. 10/10 stars . Only 290k miles to go I guess until it can be taken seriously.

One thing I did notice though. My speedometer would say I was going 75mph. But the google map would say I was going 73. Figure it might be lag. But then I would pass those radar signs and they too would always be 2 mph lower than what the dash said. This was only when I was going 60mph +. Anyone else have this issue?

Anywho. That’s my review no one asked for. Thanks for letting me join the club!

Loved the review LOL. After the first TLDR sentence, I had to read the whole thing.

The Nitto Ridge Grapplers you have. Are those 265/17r18? I could not quite tell from the photo if they are 265 or 285.
I love the look of Ridge Grapplers

Was in Moab last year at this time in my Tacoma and loved the trails out there as they are so different than what we have here in Colorado (slip rock vs just rocky). Can't wait to get the 4Runner out there. Great pics.

We can read plenty of reviews from journalists or watch awesome videos of trucks jumping over hills — and those are great. But nothing compares to hearing directly from a real owner who invested their money in a 4Runner like the one we have or are planning to get. That kind of experience gives us a true picture of what to expect.

Thanks so much for sharing!

nice trip but I'd be crying if I put 10k miles on it in a month lol...

With a 32 mile one way commute I've decided to cut out non-essential driving so I dont rack up the miles like I did on my previous two 4runners.

Southeast Toyota has been throwing Ridge Grapplers on almost every 4wd 4Runner as soon as they come off the boat. I thought I was going to hate the noise from them at first but they’re pretty quiet on the road.
Pretty sure they’re the same size as the stock 265/70R18 on the off-road. The sport premium is 265/55R20

@GabeFreeLunch after that long trip I'm curious your thoughts on Hybrid vs non-hybrid.

Are you happy you did NOT get the Max?

My thinking is I'd be happy either way for different reasons, but wanted to know your thoughts since you have actually driven enough to have a good take on it.

You'd have to ask @FlaRunner904 on his thoughts after that long of a trip.

Personally i didn't feel the hybrid was worth it unless i was going to be towing with it. I took a 1200 mile round trip a couple of weeks ago and averaged around 21-22 mpg running 75-80 most of the way. Maybe could have gotten 24-25 if it was a hybrid.

@FlaRunner904 are you happy you didn't go with the Max engine option?

im quite happy with the non hybrid. Didn’t wanna lose that little bit of space in the cargo area and from what I’ve seen on reviews. It doesn’t really give you much better gas mileage but it does add more torque. As for how the grapplers. So far I love them. They’re not loud by any means and I feel they ride quite smooth even on highway at higher speeds. I do plan on getting different wheels and tires later down the road but I want to get my moneys worth out of these for next 50k miles or so
