My '26 Limited (JBL) is my first vehicle with wireless Airplay. I do understand how the wireless connection is made (via wifi connection) with the iPhone. I use Apple music and have downloaded lossless music files that I listen to. While wireless airplay is good, the wired connection gives a better, more detailed sound (using the usb-c data port on the screen).
My question is how do you know that your connection is "wired" when using airplay, or more specifically what steps do you go through to do this? When starting the vehicle it will make the automatic wireless connection, but when I then connect the usb cable it doesn't have any indication that it is using a wired connection. I usually have to go into the settings and tell the vehicle to use my device for media (which cancels airplay), then go and change it back to "airplay". It seems like at that point it is using a wired connection based on the audio quality improvement and that it will disconnect when unplugging. Is there a easier way to do this? Yes, I've read the manual.. no, I can't find it specifically addressed. Thanks!

On your phone, go to Settings > Wifi > Edit. Click the "i" next to the carplay wireless network and disable auto join. Mine is named "Smartphone_connect_******"

I didn't think about doing it on the phone. After doing so, it was still attempting to connect (pop-up notification) but I guess I can just turn off the wifi on my phone when wanting to use the wired connection. I don't do this all the time, but just wanted to simplify the process.

From NotebookLM:

The manual does not detail a specific visual indicator on the multimedia screen to tell you whether your active Apple CarPlay session is running via the wireless connection or the wired connection.

However, the manual does confirm your method of testing the connection: if you are actively using a wired USB connection, unplugging the USB Type-C cable will cause Apple CarPlay to immediately stop operating, and your audio output will stop. If you unplug the cable and your music keeps playing, the system was routing through the wireless connection.

Why the vehicle defaults to wireless: The system is designed this way for convenience. According to the manual, if wireless CarPlay was authorized on your smartphone when you first registered the device, the multimedia system will automatically attempt to establish that wireless connection every time you turn the vehicle on. Because the wireless handshake happens very quickly as the system boots up, it usually claims the CarPlay projection before you have a chance to plug in the physical cable.

Easier ways to force a wired connection:

1. The Permanent Fix (Disable Wireless CarPlay for the 4Runner)
If you exclusively want to use wired CarPlay for the best lossless audio quality and want to stop fighting the automatic wireless connection, your best option is to remove the wireless permission entirely.

  • Go to Settings (gear icon) on the main menu, touch [Bluetooth & Devices], select your iPhone, and touch [Forget] to delete the device from the system.
  • On your iPhone, go to your CarPlay settings and forget/delete the 4Runner.
  • Next, connect your iPhone to the vehicle's data USB Type-C port using an Apple-certified cable.
  • When the vehicle and your iPhone prompt you to "Use Wireless CarPlay" for future drives, decline the prompt.

By declining the wireless setup, the vehicle will only be able to launch Apple CarPlay when the USB cable is physically connected, guaranteeing you get the wired audio quality every time without navigating through the settings menus.

2. The Temporary Fix (If you still want wireless sometimes) If you like the convenience of wireless CarPlay for quick trips but want to force a wired connection for long drives with lossless music, you can briefly sever the wireless handshake.

  • Since wireless CarPlay requires both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to initiate, simply turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on your iPhone before you turn on the vehicle.
  • Plug your iPhone into the USB-C port and start the car.
  • The system will be forced to launch CarPlay via the wired connection. Once the music is playing, you can safely toggle your phone's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth back on.
