Whoops changing cabin air filter. What did I do?

When I was trying to change my cabin air filter, I accidentally knocked a tab off of the plastic box just below the air filter box. See picture. The two little tabs at the end of the arrow are where the attachment was. When it popped off, it went down into the area where the passenger air bag sits. So, 1) What is the box and what was the tab for? 2) Is this a critical issue? 3) How would I go about finding/retrieving the tab?

I broke one of those off as well but was able to super glue it back on. It seemed brittle. You can take the kick panel off in the footwell and may be able to retrieve it. Or just don't worry about it.

don't worry about it, just don't go breaking anything else

one tab busting off will not allow anything to open or come apart.

you can stick yourself under the dash with an (8mm I think) socket and drop the blower
motor and check around up there with a borescope to confirm you haven't
'opened the case' so to speak if you want to be paranoid

The broken piece might make a new rattle sound, but it will blend it with all the other rattles
