Bought my first trailer for hauling yard waste to the dump, and the first time I drove the 4Runner with it a message popped up on the display asking me to confirm that it detected a trailer. I pressed yes, and it disabled settings like PKSB for me automatically. Once I was done and no longer had the trailer attached, it again popped up a message on the screen asking me to confirm that the trailer was no longer attached. However no matter if I selected Yes or No, it will not let me reactivate PKSB and the other features it turned off when the trailer was attached.

What am I missing?

Are you certain that once you confirm the trailer is no longer attached all of the prior functionality is not working? The first time I connected my boat trailer and then disconnect it. I sat there for an hour trying to figure out how to turn everything back on. The next day. I drove about a quarter of a mile away and the truck asked me to confirm that the trailer is no longer connected. Once I confirmed all the prior functionality was turned back on. It has worked that way for me ever since. If it's not working for you, you probably should take your truck back to the dealership and let them troubleshoot.

Yes, PKSB is definitely off and I cannot turn it back on manually. And I keep getting the message to confirm the trailer is not connected every time I start the vehicle, even though it’s been 6-7 times driving since I used the trailer.

Be sure to hold that Ok button down for a few seconds when confirming the trailer is no longer detected. You cannot simply press it, you must hold it for a few seconds.

I cannot do that, pressing OK does nothing for that setting or any of the other turned off by trailer detect. I have to turn this on and off all the time due to my bike rack so I'm familiar with the process. Thanks though.

Done that, no luck. Sounds like it's a known fault with the Tacomas I found a TSB for it. Looks like the 4Runner has the same issue so back to the dealer. Again.

I didn't even go through the process to add and name the trailer yet, and when I checked in the trailer settings this morning just to be sure there wasn't one there either. Good idea though.

Called the dealer to make an appointment and was told they've seen a few other people have this issue and to bring it in so they could sort it out.

I had a similar issue with my bike rack. When I install it (1UP) in the folded/upright position I get the Trailer detected message. I say yes and hold in the button. the 4R turns off a bunch of warnings and PKSB. When its folded down to hold my bike I get the trailer not detected but I answer No because I want the warnings turned off while using the rack. After removing the rack I answer Yes when it asks if trailer not detected (its not immediate on start up, usually have to drive a bit) and everything is back to normal. At least thats how i remember it

or force it to detect a trailer. connect a 7 pin adapter (if you have a spare one) so it actually detects a trailer and then wait like 1-2 mins and go remove the adapter.

i actually carry a spare 7/4 adapter, cause u-haul trailers

Those are the steps I'm doing, but for whatever reason the trailer not detected message keeps popping up each time I start the 4R.

I was only using the 4-pin cable on my little trailer. First time ever owning something to actually tow, so I don't have spare adaptors for this kind of stuff. yet. :)

Well this morning I was able to fix the issue. I noticed that the clock on the instrument cluster hadn‘t changed with daylight savings time even though set to auto, because I have Connected Services disabled. I manually set the correct time and then the trailer message stopped appearing and I could once again disable and enable whatever safety settings I wanted individually.

Probably just a weird coincidence that it happened when I changed the clock, but I’m glad it’s fixed whatever it was.

I had my bike rack with bike and the 4runner thought I was going to hit something so it engaged the e- brake while I was backing up. Not cool at all

Yeah that's why you need to turn off PKSB every time you use a bike rack, definitely an annoyance.
