Yesterday, I noticed that there was some very visible paint damage on my rear bumper and realized that someone had accidentally hit my 4runner while it was parked. I decided to check the footage stored on Toyota's integrated dashcam that came with the 4runner but there were irrelevant footages under "Park" and no footage under "Events". Upon closer inspection, I saw that I had previously set the park G-force value as 6 (it ranges from 1 to 6) believing that 6 is the most sensitive setting. After this incident, I am now suspecting that 6 is actually the least sensitive setting. However, I cannot confirm whether that is correct since I couldn't find any information regarding it's scaling in the owner's manual and online resources gave me contradicting answers. I hope you guys can confirm my suspicions.

Btw, I purchased Toyota's official touch up paint but after applying multiple layers with 30 minute increments in between, the black plastic is still visible and only caused the scratch to become shiny. I've also attached pictures in case anyone is curious on the extent of the damage and my unsuccessful attempt to fix it.

Edit: I looked at the settings again and realized that for Park mode, it is Low, Medium, or High Sensitivity and I had set it to High. The sensitivity value (1 to 6) only applies to events while the vehicle is on or in motion and does not apply to when it is parked.

Yikes! I feel for you brother. Beautiful color. My brother lives 1,000 miles from me in Texas, but coincidentally we both both new 4Runners at about the same time. He traded in his 2006 Avalon with 51K miLes on it in perfect condition. He got $3K for it and the dealer kept it (naturally) and advertised it for $10K. It was gone within a week.

Anyway, he called me yesterday and asked me if my TRD Sport Premium had a factory dash cam and I said no. His was on it from the factory and he had no idea. Lucky him right? Does this mean it operates on the rear as well? I called my dealer and the part is $450 and labor is $270, so therefore I won’t be getting that unfortunately. He got the 4WD TRD Off Road Premium in the Everest color. Any thoughts fellas? Thanks!

I doubt that scratch would have tripped the most sensitive cameras
it's barely scraped. if the plastics were mashed inward maybe but not that

Unfortunately, it seems like the factory dashcam only records the front and there is no attachment for a rear camera.

another reason i mainly back into parking spots (not saying that someone still can't hit the rear, but reduces potential for this)

parking lot shopping carts can sometimes do this type of damage too....

I agree that shopping carts can also do this type of damage but in this case, I was parked in a mall where there are no shopping carts anywhere.

yeah, i feel your pain. its annoying at the very least.

as for the repair: not sure why the red touch up paint didnt cover the black. did you apply the red and then the clear coat, or just a clear coat?

Unfortunate, I think its a bit too much for touchup paint to look good. But you can try! Double check the color code on the paint is correct, shake it up very well. It looks very runny. Apply a very thin layer and wait at least 10 mins to dry before the 2nd coat. 2-3 coats is enough. Apply the clear coat a few hours later but wait at least 30 mins for the clear to dry. You need sand paper to smooth it out thought (for both color and clear). There are videos on youtube showing how. Be VERY CAREFUL.

I'd stick with non OEM dashcams, they are know for potato quality. I'd go with something like a Viofo that has front and rear recording. No cloud (obvious why), has numerous parking record options, event detection recording etc.

I used Toyota's official touch up paint (https://autoparts.toyota.com/products/product/supersonic-red-00258003u521) and I brushed the paint using the built-in brush (since the damage is wide). I made sure to shake the bottle well before applying. Visually, the paint is very red but when I brushed it onto the damage, the red color just disappears. Thankfully, it colored in the white parts of the plastic but the black plastic was still visible. I think the color is just way too dark for the paint to cover up. After I let it dry, I definitely noticed the built-in clearcoat but the red was unnoticeable for some reason. I applied 4 layers but there was no difference.

I believe you are correct. The damage is too much for the touch-up paint to work. I have seen Youtube videos and most of them are for small paint chips from rocks and the touchup paint is added to prevent rust and make the paint chips less noticeable. Luckily the scratch is on the plastic bumper so I'm not too worried.
