To be clear, I was waiting for my connected services sub to die so I would stop getting the annoying pop-ups for entering school zones over my Android Auto. That, I believe, is from Drive Connect. So would this Remote Connect give me the remote vehicle checks without adding back in those pop-ups?
I find the school zone notifications annoying as well. The funny part is I have never gotten the school zone alert in the town I live and I work at the school!?! I drive to and from school district property every workday. But I do get the alert when I pass any other school (regardless whether or not school is in-session).

1st and 2nd press need to be held for around .5 secs and delay around .5 secs and hold on 3rd.

dont watch for the lights to blink, the delay watching for blink will break the sequence
I get consistent starts with 3 fast presses and hold. I don't even think about timing,
just bam-bam-bam-hold. the verification blinks are somewhat delayed and I am done
pressing by the 2nd blink, and 3rd blink is even a bit later. then it starts

Im old-school but I think it’s a greedy money grab to lock features behind a monthly subscription. And it’s a slippery slope. Every generation, more and more features will be locked behind a pay wall that cost more and more over time.

Just look at what Mercedes and BMW are doing… $1200/year to unlock your cars full performance, or $18/month to activate your heated seats. FFS.

personally i dont see it as a money grab. all the features of the app are not a need, its more of a convenience. you dont need the features the app gives you.

the remote start can be done via the fob, all the app does is give you more convenience features like longer range, the ability to set remote start temp, have gps nav via the toyota nav, etc.

can you do all those things without the app ? yes, i can set the temp of the heater and fan speed and then turn off the vehicle. i can remote start it with those settings when using the fob (granted the range sucks but thats an issue for the person if you dont like the range. if you want longer ranger go out and get a remote start unit not tied to toyota for a 1 time fee. its not like toyota is forcing you to use the app to get those same conveniences.

do i need nav via the toyota nav app ? no, i can use android auto/carplay or i can use my garmin gps (which i do since i can program my route the way i want)

its a better solution than some other oem's.

look at drone mobile, compustar, viper, etc. you can use the remote start fob or you can pay for the better convenience features of the monthly/yearly sub. do you need those sub features ? no, but thats an option. no one complains about the sub cost of compustart, drone mobile, viper, etc but when it comes to oem's its all bets off.

its the same thing just different company.

@4R-Sport it takes me 3 or 4 times to get the fob to work. My thumb doesn't seem to be able master the sequence. The other thing is that the fob only works when you're a few feet away.
My fob will work while I’m inside my house and the truck is in the garage so it works quite a ways away but the way to do it is you have to hit lock 3 times and hold on that third time and count to 4 seconds and let go and it will take a second and it should start

I'm in and out of large manufacturing facilities and airports where the key fob is useless, even if I could master the sequence every time. My thumb and my brain aren't always in sequence and at my age, I don't expect that to improve...

Distance matters, structure details matter, the RF environment matters. For five consecutive days I've used the fob remote start. From inside stores at the register, my house with the detached garage door closed, right outside my office building 500 - 1000 feet away, other random spots. I've found it's pretty reliable. Not perfect but neither were the Viper and Clifford systems I've installed in other vehicles. My issue was not holding the last press long enough. Use the Staying Alive beat and hold for four seconds worked every time. The button press pattern, timer, 20 minute inhibit, and the fact it appears you have to unlock the doors with the key fob before opening the driver door at least (no Smart Key unlock) or the engine shuts off is annoying, but it seems to work fine in my life.

Maybe I've been using the wrong beat? I'm gonna switch it up and I don't care if people look at me funny.

2025 2026 4runner 6th gen Toyota Remote Connect is $8 per month now {filename}
