Hey guys, I’ve been dealing with a rapid ticking noise originating from the vents underneath the screen. It sounds like plastic of some sorts quickly vibrating, and is not associated with speed of the vehicle (I hear it sub 40mph too). Dealership told me they have to remove the entire front dash and add sound absorbing material to try and deafen it. First, anyone else have this issue? Secondly, I feel like adding sound deadening material is just hiding the problem…

here’s a clip of the noise

If you think that rattle is annoying, wait until they rip your dashboard out. You’ll have so many rattles afterwards that you’ll forget all about this one.

I have to agree, the dash will never go back correctly and may cause other issues. It's disappointing for so called "reliable Toyota's".

Does the noise change with fan speed?

no doesn’t change with fan speed which is why I’m convinced it’s plastic incorrectly put back there somewhere

I had squeak and rattle responsibility for an OEM in a previous life. It does sound like there is plastic rubbing. It's worth pushing on the areas around the vent to see if you can affect the noise; if so some kind of shim may resolve it. If it's buried within the IP you may have few options. Id also be scared of having a dealer remo e the whole IP assembly but I think I'd risk it since I would not live with that noise. One of the last-minute options that we used for plastic rubbing issues that slipped through was a coating called Atchinson Colloids (not sure of spelling). If the sound is coming from the climate control ducts maybebthere is a chance of finding it with a fiber optic aid...and maybe lubricating it if possible.

You are correct in that adding sound absorption would not address the root cause, it could only make it quieter.

I had that in my 21 Tundra after I had the vehicle serviced. The dealer pulled my cabin air filter to check it and dropped leaves down in the fan and left it. I removed the cabin filter and vacuumed out the fan, all fixed. Could be that.

from my sleuthing days on our 2016 taco, eventually replaced the toothpicks with felt between the A pillar and speaker cover to get rid of the plastics from rubbing and causing them to squeak.
