@rosnaby If you have skid plates, I would also recommend temporarily removing the skid plates to clean off mud that likely collected above the skid plates.
Yup. Brought home an extra 50lbs of sludge stuck on those things. I gave a good rinse at the self wash but i need to take a day this week to really clean the nooks and crannies by taking those plates off. This will probably be a month long endeavor, the inside of my car is a mess too hahaha

If you have a yard, one of those oscillating grass sprinklers underneath your rig and moved around occasionally can do wonders.

I never would have admitted they were jeeps. 😂
I was going to suggest getting an old Jeep and putting tires, lift, lockers, and winch on it for serious offloading. Not sure if there’s any vehicle with stock tires and no lift would make it through that puddle. Been there, done it both ways.

by the way, if you notice your brakes start grinding a bit, you may have to pull the calipers and clean the sand and mud underneath the brake pads.

keep having fun, you’ll figure it out.

I was in Jackson twnship, two towers loop its called on onX… its barely even deep in the pine barrens, just the closest spot to me in northern NJ and i wanted to have fun on Easter morning hahaha… theres a couple sandpits off the main road up there (think the main road is cassville prospertown road)that are meant for dirtbikers that had puddles like the one i got stuck in, was actually quite fun until i botched…I did do the brendan t byrne to bear swamp hill route back in december, but it was dry as hell and nothing particular difficult at all mainly because of just how dry it was at that time. Next time i will probably just do that post a little rain and stay on the designated roads lol.

Yeah so unfortunately i live in northern NJ, paying for a 2nd parking spot where i am is like paying for 3 cars hahaha. Goal is to just make this that modded offroading vehicle one day but thats years down the line when I move to somewhere I can park 2 cars (knock on wood)…. Also looking back you are right, I’m so stupid for wanting to test my stock vehicle out and thinking I had that pit, I was not even close and not sure any stock vehicle could have gotten it….But i did have that other mud pit that was only a foot or so deep and it was fun as hell, so I shall be back haha

And i cant believe how little I have noticed from this car after my mishap and taking it in every situation for its first 5k miles…at least 1k have been drifting in snow (i even put 200miles moving in a
snowstorm), going over pine barrens sand, or bottoming out in mud. Drives straight as day 1 still somehow, no noises or rattling going 75-80 on the highway, brakes acting the same (not great to begin with to be honest in terms of pure stopping lol, but no noises or grinding at all) and my mechanic said everything on the bottom looks tiptop (this was before my mishap of course but i still has taken it offroad quite a few times prior)… when i had my jetta, one time I spun out in the rain from a tire that was slowly losing pressure but the sensor didn’t activate on my dash, and ended up in the grass median… when i got back onto the highway, the thing sounded like it was going to explode and i was leaving a trail of grass behind me… swear the car never drove the same either and the brakes absolutely did grind for weeks after, so I am quite impressed with how well the 4runner handles my poor use of it so far.

air tires down to 15 PSI, Lock rear diff and make sure it stays locked (the Gen 67 will unlock differential if you turn truck off). After airing down activate crawl control IN REVERSE and pay close attention to how the truck reacts. The truck should pull back at least 6 inches. If the truck does not pull back, then your finished, your spare tire has hung you up and the only option is to use recover boards or get a tow. If there are tree branches close by you can try gravving trunks and logs and throwing them under the front tire and that could work too but if that rear spare is hanging you up, your pretty much hooped without serious recover gear on you.

If you have rubber matts, wrap them around logs before you put the log under the tire, this can sometimes help as well.
Meant to respond to this but forgot in my manicness yesterday… why crawl in reverse? I actually did not try that at all, i did crawl but in drive and that was when it seemed to just bog me down a slight bit more….also i was winched in reverse by the jeeps who seemed to know what they were doing haha… so is there something to that, reverse recovery? I assume maybe because if i was able to get that far going forward, the logic is i should be able to do it going back? are you always supposed to crawl in reverse first in situations like this?

Looking back, locking the diff and trying to reverse didnt seem to bring me down further at all, it was only in drive where i seemingly was going lower trying different things… i kinda regret not trying crawl in reverse and throwing a ton of logs/boards underneath… i was just so worried about my “premium” interior possibly having water get in I didnt go through all logical options haha

Yea if its dry it more of a scenic route, but after some rain its a whole different ball game. The first time we went out last year my buddy almost Lost his Ram 1500 because we got caught in a flash flood and he had almost bare A/T's. I could hardly pull him out as I'm quite weighed down, was in water, and he's much heavier. All good fun.

Thats another thing I am putting on the checklist, make sure there is a 0% chance of storms on radar before going out there to be dumb… could so see how a 2/10 trail becomes a truck eating highway within a couple hours if the wrong storm comes through. Truly crazy the difference between the dry days and when its wet in those woods. Crappy A/T can almost do anything on a dry day on the main roads, and on a bad day even huge M/Ts might have trouble.

finally some real off-roading.. if you had 2 sets of traction pads you'd be out.. first order of business is better tires with a side walll. nittos are the best but a set of K03s or wild peaks would do you alot better. also if your really offloading take off the running boards all they do is just lower the ground clearance in that area.

Are the running boards not beneficial for the sticks and branches i kick up on trails? Heard some wicked ones whack my door this past weekend so i thought they offered a bit of protection, am i naive in that regard too haha?….Since its still a new car technically, i did want to keep the lower door/rocker panels as clean as possible from debris for atleast a few years… Also if im taking off the boards, the mud guards gotta get deleted too, and then i really need a lift and 35’s to make it all look right… and that is all too much for my budget at the moment, so I think a stupidity checklist (im already working on) and upgraded true 33” A/Ts will come first and then ill see about winch vs these ground clearance upgrades down the line…
