Loved the post here of the video describing arcane "TOYOTA 3-second rules". Though not a 3-second rule, here's something simple I only just discovered randomly. After enabling "accessory mode" (press the Start button without your foot on the brake), it always bugged me that the only way I could shut accessory mode off was to first start the engine, then immediately turn it off by pressing the brake and pressing Start. Turns out just pressing the Start button TWICE does the trick (WITHOUT your foot on the brake). No need to start the engine.

With all push-to-start cars I’ve owned its like this. Push once (no brake) for ACC, push again (no brake) for ON, push again (no brake) for OFF.

I just double-checked in my Off-Road to make sure I wasn't lying. In accessory mode (i.e. engine off), pressing the ON/OFF switch (no brake) says "not ready to drive, blah blah blah". I have to hit the ON/OFF button a second time (no brake) to turn off the accessory mode.

Are you sure? Without stepping on the brake in my 4Runner,
1. pressing start button for the first time - accessory/acc mode
2. pressing the start button a second time - ignition on, engine off
3. pressing the start button a third time - powers the vehicle down (aka off)

We are saying the same thing. When in accessory mode (which took ONE press to enable), it takes TWO presses to shut everything down. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

I see what you're saying now. I believe all push-button start vehicles are the same way. You might be thinking that if you're in accessory (first push) that pressing it again after some time would turn it off, but I've never seen that in the last 15 years of owning push-button start vehicles. You always have to go through the cycle.

Thanks for that info--this is my first push-to-start/stop car. And sorry if I'm beating a dead horse, but the reason I posted the original note is that it took me a year to realize that when that "not ready to drive" message comes up along with "push brake to start", I could just push start again without the brake instead of starting the car and then immediately turning it off!

If you that blew your mind did you know you can start the engine WITHOUT pressing the brake? Press the button once to turn on accessory mode then press and hold it for 15-20 seconds and the engine will start. This is an emergency start procedure in case the brake pedal switch fails.
