Has anyone mounted a rear dashcam on their 6th Gen yet? If so, which mount did you use to support the rear dashcam?

Most of what I see online is for 5th Gen or older. Any help would be appreciated! Pictures as well!

The attachment point for mine and the others I've seen is based on using the headliner attachment bracket's pop-in connector, at the rear of the vehicle (there's a circular black plastic plug midway across the back liftgate opening, a few inches inward of the back edge of the headliner).

I wasted money on one bracket for the 5th gen that didn't quite work in the 6th gen and then just made my own custom bracket. I wanted to drop the camera lens down about 3/4-1" farther, to better clear the wiper and trim at the top of the window on the liftgate (otherwise I would have needed to point the camera lens downward to clear it), and to also move the camera lens closer to the closed rear window. I also wanted to use a screw into the headliner bracket, rather than just a plastic pop-in headliner plug (this just required adding the right size of U-nut to the headliner bracket).

This is what my DIY bracket looks like:

It's just using 1/8" thick aluminum bar stock, bend it, cut to length, round the corners, drill a hole for the headliner attachment screw, and paint it black. I can post more details if you're interested in doing a DIY bracket but no point in me going to that effort if you're not likely to make a DIY bracket.

Also, the best way of mounting a rear camera on the 6th gen is going to be somewhat dependent on the specific camera you're using (just because the cameras have different sizes and lens offset relative to the attachment base of the camera). Some will apparently work with just a flat rectangular plate, a roof (horizontal) mount rather than vertical, and re-using the plastic headliner plug that the factory installed.

PS, the VLT measurement of the factory tint in the rear window is about 27%. I have not added a tint film to that. I think the factory tint actually helps during the day (reduces brightness and most rear cameras cannot add a polarizer filter) but probably reduces sensitivity somewhat at night. During the day, when I compare video recorded with the rear camera and the back window down vs with the back window up, the image sharpness is indistinguishable between them if the camera isn't looking into the sun, and is better (less glare and wash-out) with the window up if the camera is looking into the sun.

my dash cam back camera isn’t mounted in the middle on purpose. I’ll post a picture of how it’s mounted.

Hello everyone! I have a 2025 Heritage Blue Toyota 4Runner. Tires size 245/70r/17. I'd like to increase size on tires just a bit! To all season tires. 255/ 65r/17 front & 265/70r/17 in rear! I would appreciate some feed back on this subject!

Still waiting on that pic! I gotta figure out a way to mount it so I don’t keep bumping into it all the time.

Since there are 3 of the push clips holding the headliner in the rear, I guess you could just use one of the outer 2 instead of the middle one?
If you mount the camera off-center like that, I guess you have to choose a side to bias the aim towards. I'd probably choose to bias the aim toward the driver's side but I suppose it's just a guess. Or maybe you can still get a fairly centered rear camera view even if you use one of the outer headliner push pin/clips; not sure.

PS, I replaced the push clip with a screw so the camera base would clamp better and be easier to remove and reinstall if needed. I put a u-nut on the metal bracket that the headliner push clip normally pushes into.

I'm leaning more toward putting the camera on the driver's side since the headrest in the second row would probably block and hide it from view.

I’m also thinking about running the cable through to the trunk door. There’s already some wiring close to the center, so that seems like a good route to take, especially with an opening nearby that's not covered.

After heavy rain, I noticed that everything above the blue line stayed dry, so that could be a solid spot for the rear camera. I’ll need to figure out how to mount it since it was meant for a rear window.

But I’m not sure about running the cable over the blue line because that might let water in. I think the blue line is where the door meets the rubber seals.

Dont do that. I had mine ran that way and water pooled in from a car wash. It needs to be mounte d on the headliner.

If you want to test, take a glass of water and pour it down the seam of where the door hatch opens/closes on the roof. If the USB cable/wire goes over the seal, you'll notice water pour in. A heavy down fall of rain or car wash will let water in (pops over the seal).

Here’s how I mounted mine using the mount I linked before in this thread. I used the middle clip.

I totally forgot that the cable has to come from somewhere! I was thinking about mounting it on the left clip (on the driver’s side), but then the cable would have to run from the middle clip.

Or I could put it on the right side and run the cable from the right pillar. Honestly, neither option really looks good to me.

Does this white line between the headliner and the sealing look like the headliner dropped a little from the weight of the camera?

No the weight of the camera doesn’t factor in because it is clipped into the roof with the factory headliner clip. It probably looks like that because I pulled the headliner down to see what it looks like in there and to more easily remove the clip. Or maybe it always look like that I never noticed it.

Thanks for confirming! What do you think about drilling a hole below the sealing (where there is no opening) and adding a grommet like this one, and pulling wires through? A half-inch top section should do the trick, and I can seal the cable coming out with Flex Seal or silicone.

The flexible wire conduit and grommet in the center are for the washer. A micro USB connector might fit through, letting me place the wire in the new opening. Sounds a bit crazy, huh?
