Protective and Compensating Modifications for Engine and Powertrain

I’ve mentioned this in another thread quite a while back but didn’t get much response as there still weren’t many bolt-on performance modifications. Currently, we have a lot of engine modifications that can be done to really push the limits of these 4Runners. With an upgraded intercooler, charge pipes, Downpipe and a compensating tune, I’m easily sitting in the 350-370 HP range. If I throw an updated turbo at it and the next compensating tune, it’s possible to be in the 390-420 range. With all that in mind, outside of a more aggressive maintenance schedule, what can be done to ensure longevity? Realistically, I know I’ll be adding a transmission cooler, but I’m not hearing much about oil coolers, bigger radiators and catch cans. I’ve yet to see anyone add a bigger radiator or an oil cooler. Catch cans have been installed by a few people, but they aren’t seeing much value.

This toyota engine already has it's own oil catch system. it is not just a PCV valve redirected to the intake like old-school, it is more involved.

This is a fully closed-loop PCV system with an integrated oil separator (Ventilation Case #1). It's more sophisticated than a traditional single PCV valve setup.

I have not heard of anyone seeing oil temp issues that would motivate an oil cooler…

if you were truly looking to modify your 4R for longevity, maybe one of the tuners could come up with a de-tune to run it at 80% power/torque or something, lol

increasing HP does not necessarily increase or maintain system longevity though. Chasing power can indirectly affect engine health. I'm not sold on the SXTH inter-cooler design with regard to flow numbers and pressure drop. changing from the crappy 0w20 water to a more robust oil, better HTHS, will do more for the turbo health than a charge pipe or tune ever could. What's your goal in chasing horsepower for this vehicle? And yes, there are a few owners on here who've stated the need for cooling the transmission for towing, hill climbing and off-roading.
