I will start by saying I love how the new 6th gen drives and handles. Everything else has been a nightmare.
My experience started with being one of the lucky people who’s 4Runner got stuck in a port hold for over a month. This was great as I was moving across the country at the time which made getting it when it was ready a logistical struggle. I finally got the vehicle and purchased the oem rock sliders as my first modification only to find that Toyota hadn’t threaded the holes from the factory. This is completely inexcusable from any auto manufacturer much less one that is as well known for quality and attention to detail as Toyota. I’m still trying to find an adequate solution to get them installed.
My biggest issue however came a week ago. I was on an easy to moderate mountain trail that I regularly ran in my 3rd gen Tacoma prior that I have seen Subarus complete. I had to stop halfway as my dashboard light up with warnings about high transmission fluid temperature. I had to keep stopping to let it cool down. When I got to the end I tried to pop the hood for more airflow but wasn’t even able to because the whole engine bay was too hot to the touch. It was only in the low 60s outside. I waited for a few hours before proceeding back home.
The next day I noticed a metallic sound fourth gear and below when downshifting while descending a mountain pass in Colorado. It is due for its first 5k service in a couple days and I am terrified as to what they may find. Toyota is going to have a real problem on their hands if the transmissions can’t handle mild off road trails. It really gives me concern as to the longevity of this new generation.
