Twice in the last week I went into my garage at night and heard a whirring sound coming from my 2025 ORP 4Runner. At first I thought it was coming from the old refrigerator or the HVAC, but in my dismay it was coming from my new vehicle. The noise was kind of like a whirring from a fan and was occurring hours after I parked the car. Both times the noise went away after I was restarted the car and cut the engine. Has anyone else experienced this and/or is this something I should be concerned about?

It's completely normal according to Car Care Nut. It's the EVAP system (or maybe others) working properly. Mine does it as well. You don't need to be concerned.

if only Toyota would put this stuff in the manual, right ?

oh snap

Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel evaporation leakage check and it does not indicate a malfunction.

Ha! I never even looked in the manual. Funny they actually address it. Do they have anything in the manual that says “for unspecified reasons we’ve built one inch of play into your glove box closure”? 😂

Wow? My bad for coming to this forum to ask a legitimate question about my vehicle without checking the manual first. I'll be sure to read through the entire manual next time I have a question or concern.

Thank you for your responses to put my mind (and more importantly my wife's mind) at ease.

No bad on you. In my opinion the manual is a general reference and in some ways poorly done.
This forum provides a much quicker and better response than pawing through the books.
I was trying to determine if I had the noise cancellation by reading the manual...best it could do is some general info and "if equipped".
It's like a topo map of the entire US.

You do not need to be concerned, as this is a completely normal vehicle function.
What you are hearing in your garage is the sound of a routine fuel evaporation leakage check. Approximately five hours after the vehicle is turned off, the vehicle performs this automated test, which emits a sound from underneath the vehicle that lasts for several minutes.
Because it is an automated check that occurs when the vehicle is dormant, restarting the car interrupts the cycle, which explains why the noise went away when you restarted the engine. This noise does not indicate a malfunction

I have generally read my manual (not quite cover to cover probably, but the vast majority). That said, I am sure I have missed things and have asked about those. I do not recall seeing that note about the evap system, and honestly would not have expected the manual to state this--so may not have checked. So, even with due diligence anyone can ask questions that are already answered in the manual. No foul unless someone never tries checking the manual/other references!

My wife’s Honda CRV does exactly the same thing five hours after she shuts it off. Never noticed it on the 4Runner, but then again, I park it in a detached garage.
