Xterra and Pathfinder is being revived by Nissan. Sales won't start until 2028 but sounds like it'll target the 4Runner just like in the past.

According to Automotive News, the Japanese automaker shared the news of the Xterra and Pathfinder’s return to Nissan’s lineup at its national dealer meeting in Las Vegas on Wednesday. Per the outlet, the Xterra was described as a “rugged, affordable midsize SUV” that’ll go on sale in 2028.

Nissan Americas Chairman Christian Meunier reportedly shared images of a design study performed by the automaker, teasing a boxy, adventure-ready SUV with an “upright grille and squarish headlights.” According to the report, these sketches are tied to new, upcoming body-on-frame models like the Xterra, Pathfinder, and Infiniti QX60 SUVs, as well as the Frontier pickup truck.

Specs for individual vehicles were not divulged, but the report claims that the upcoming Xterra is expected to feature a hybrid V6 engine with a range extender capable of 75 miles of electric-only driving. These vehicles are expected to be built at the automaker’s Canton, Mississippi, factory, where the Frontier is currently built.

They'd have to totally rebuild the Pathfinder from scratch. Unibody, no bueno. I had a Xterra from 2011-2023. It did what I needed to do.

They were fine back then but Nissans have never been built up to the quality of Toyota. Add to that, they're planning on closing seven assembly plants 2027, they are billions of dollars in debt and the bailout from Honda fell through last year. They are on borrowed time, knowing that I would never purchase anything from them anymore with the possibility of them disappearing altogether being extremely likely.

My first vehicle was a Nissan, a king cab truck. It was indestructible! Had they still been building the Pathfinder on the truck frame, it would have been more closely considered before I bought the 4Runner. However, almost every SUV was on the table.

I really hope Nissan is able to rebuild their brand and get back to building great vehicles.
