Hello everyone! After lurking and learning so much from this forum I have finally joined and this is my first post! While I should have started with more of a formal introduction / meet & greet, I will try to add more to the community as time permits. As of now, I would like to share my experience with Wolfbox including a few issues that I encountered as well as working with support to resolve those issues.
Back Story: It took a long time for me to get my 2025 4R (that story will eventually be posted HERE), so I had a lot of time to think through the options that I had selected after working with a dealership and getting in line to wait for an allocation. I did not opt in for the Tow Tech Package with the digital rearview mirror. I didn’t have much experience with a digital rearview mirror with the exception of a rental that I drove from PA to FL in 2023. While it took time for me to get used to that digital mirror, it did offer some advantages with overall rear visibility (especially on I-95 in FL).
While patiently waiting for my 4R, I started to regret that I did not include that option. It is my understanding that the Tow Tech Package is a factory installed option, and I did not want to make that type of change which would result in delaying my purchase. I started looking for some alternate options, and eventually started falling down a dash cam rabbit hole. After spending a great deal of time reading forum posts and watching YouTube, I became intrigued with the potential two-in-one (digital rearview mirror and dash cam) solutions from Wolfbox.
Wolfbox Decision: I ended up ordering the Wolfbox G900 Pro on Prime Day in October about three weeks before the new 4R arrived. I did have to test (aka play) with the setup and connected everything in the house after it was delivered. All went well and I was happy with my purchase. When my 4R arrived in late October I wanted to spend a little time getting used to it prior to making any changes, so I waited a couple of weeks before installing the new Wolfbox.
Initial Test Installation: I went with a very primitive and ugly “Dangling Christmas Tree Lights” cable installation for “testing” purposes but everything was secure. Things went well for a few days, but then I started having random rear camera disconnects. I’d be driving with the rear camera displayed and it would switch to the front camera. At this point, it was like the rear camera was being physically unplugged and reconnected at random even when the 4R was parked and idling. The rear camera view was black with a message saying that it was looking for the rear camera. I thoroughly checked all of the connections, but was unable to resolve the issue.
Enter Wolfbox Support: I reached out to support and they were very fast to respond. They recommended the typical - check all connections, ensure the red wire is connected securely, etc. FYI – I am not using the Wolfbox as a “backup” camera so my red wire was not connected, but the exposed end was trimmed and covered to ensure it wasn’t causing an issue. I’ve worked in IT for 20+ years, so I’m familiar with troubleshooting. I followed the directions support provided to double check that I didn’t miss anything, but the problem persisted.
I always did my best to provide support with detailed information on the steps I was taking which they were quite responsive to. Almost immediately they sent me out a full replacement unit. However, we suspected the problem was with the rear camera cabling or the rear camera. It was recommended that I start by replacing only the rear camera (which was conveniently the quickest and easiest thing to do). After replacing the rear camera, the disconnecting issue was resolved. I was happy and content so after a few days I sent the replacement unit back using the return label they provided. The following week I took the time to properly conceal the GPS & rear camera cabling.
Unfortunately, after sending the unit back I started running into another issue. The mirror/screen started to randomly switch views while driving. The rear camera was no longer disconnecting, but the display would switch from front, split & rear camera views for no apparent reason. I did a full reset on the mirror and disabled voice controls to make sure the problem wasn’t caused by background noise. The problem continued and at one point I turned off the screen on my way to work (because it started switching views) and when I arrived, I stopped the 4R and put it in park. The screen then turned back on and start switching between views again. My biggest takeaway at that point was the 4R was not moving and there was no noise when the problem occurred (so clearly the problem wasn’t a result of connections bouncing due to rough roads or ambient noise).
I reached out to support. Once again, they were very responsive and quick to assist. Without any hesitation they sent me another replacement unit (I didn't even have time to ask for one!). This time when I received the replacement, I only replaced the mirror. It has now been a week and I haven’t had any issues with the Wolfbox and am really starting to like it more now that it is working consistently. While the issues I encountered were frustrating, I understand that can happen with technology.
Working with Wolfbox support has been a pleasant experience. They were always quick to respond, provided accurate troubleshooting steps, and did not hesitate to send a replacement unit to help resolve my issue (twice!). In hindsight, I wish I would have replaced both the rear camera and mirror/screen when I received the first replacement. Thinking back there were some “issues” with my first mirror that I did not recognize as issues due to not being familiar with how the system should work. I did notice that the touch functionality wasn’t always consistent (especially when trying to move the camera view up & down and when using the rear camera zoom feature). The replacement mirror seems to be much more responsive and I have no issues with the touchscreen functionality. I am not sure if there was a bad batch of hardware, but I have been able to find similar reports of problems from a number of different forums/sites from the same general time frame as when I purchased mine last fall. Regardless, Wolfbox has done everything they can to make this right for me and I appreciate that, which is why I wanted to share my experience here.
Personally, I don’t mind DIY projects (which I will assume is like many of you). Although, I can see where the problems I initially encountered could be very frustrating for others. In my case, I have a very short commute to work and don’t drive much (especially if I don’t have to in winter). Experiencing the initial issues on my short commute to & from work wasn’t a major deal. I may feel differently had I been on a long road trip or if I had paid for the Wolfbox to be installed and needed to take it back to the installer multiple times.
At this point, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Wolfbox to others, but like anything it is important to have realistic expectations. I think it makes sense for everyone to do their homework and to properly test the system prior to going all in on the installation. I did not have any issues at first so I’m glad I did not take the time for a clean (more permanent) install initially. Overall, that saved me time in the long run.
If you made it this far into the post, let me apologize! I may have made this longer than it needed to be, but I hope others will find this helpful.
Shout Out to @Wolfbox for providing great support! It’s not hard to find posts on this forum as well as others sharing similar experiences!
And Shout Out to the members of this community including @Van Solo that have shared their experiences with Wolfbox as well!
