Hi all!
Last month I received my @Wolfbox G900 TriPro - here’s my review as promised!
Full disclosure, I have a ton of Wolfbox stuff already, including their MegaVolt 24 jump starter, MegaFlow 24 inflator, Level 2 EV Charger (used when I had my JLUR 4XE), and even the G900 Pro Mirror. Every single item has been amazing so far and I’d recommend every single one of them!
So you get the main idea here - they took the G900 Pro and added a third camera. This thing comes in two variants, both include the same primary mirror/front camera and rear view camera, as well as a third camera. The third camera is what differentiates the two models - one comes with an external camera (most commonly used as a front bumper cam), while the second version comes with an interior camera. My unit is the second.
While I assumed the interior camera version would be marketed primarily to ride share and delivery drivers, I was actually pretty excited to get ahold of one as I thought the second camera could help me keep an eye on my two pups in the back. I hit one snag with this so far - the interior camera cord is too short to get a good rear angle thanks to the sunroof. I need to send Wolfbox a note to see if I can get an extension. I’m also curious as to whether the exterior and interior cams are interchangeable on these units. I’m not sure what I’d do with an external camera already having the Toyota suite but it’s always nice to have options.
As for the video quality? Amazing. The front 4k resolution is insane in any light. When watching on the mirror itself you’ll see a cropped image - real time and play back via the mirror - with the download coming out like the attached. Easily the most impressive recoding quality I’ve personally seen in a dash cam.
My biggest surprise with this unit was how much better the updated rear camera is compared to my previous G900 Pro. It’s about the same in the day time but at night this things really shines. The nighttime quality is easily twice a good compared to my last one. With my G900 Pro I’d constantly turn off the video feed at night and use it as a standard, reflective mirror. No more doing that with the new unit - I get better visibility at night with the camera feed than without.
The install was extremely straight forward. I pulled switched, constant, and ground from the previous rear view’s harness (non trailer/tow version). I thought about using a Dongar but decided it was easy enough to tap the three wires using WolfBox’s hardwire kit. I opted not to install the GPS antenna and didn’t have any issues - I’m sure I’m losing some added data points but will take the trade off for a cleaner install. I’m using their standard OEM bracket and am extremely happy with the fitment. There is some front cam blockage with as high as I have it sitting, but the recording angle is wide enough that I feel like I’m still getting everything I need.
One small knock on both this version and my G900 Pro is that the way the cables connect and stick out the top of the mirror. I’m sure the designers have their reasons, but it can look like there’s a lot going on up there when you have power, two external cameras, and a GPS antenna all connected. One cool thing about the tri-pro is that both the power and rear camera are USB-C (power was USB-C on my last one too). I feel like the best look possible came from using two 90 degree USB-C extensions, which not only minimized the wire profile but also allowed me to get the mirror itself closer to the roof line.
I considered a few mounting options for the rear camera itself. At first I ordered some 5th gen mounts to play with but they were all a little too ‘noticeable’ for me. I took the rear hatch apart and even ordered a new lower spoiler cover to drill but they were back ordered - that and having trouble getting a thin enough grommet to not obstruct the view made it a no go for me. In the end a settled on a similar mounting solution as my last Bronco. I simply used a generic mount extension from Amazon to 3M the mount under the rubber seal attachment and played with the placement until I got it just right (in my opinion at least). You can barely see this thing from the inside and it clears the rear window. With the on-mirror cropping it’s a perfect view, although in the export you’ll see a wider angle and more of the interior.
There are a ton of other features I haven’t covered in detail that others may find useful.
- Voice control
- Digital zoom and tilt
- Surveillance mode
- Photo capture
- Multi-view
- Play back directly on the mirror itself as well as the app
Having issues uploading video samples but will try again as a second post. Happy to answer any question and open to feedback on the install!
