isnt that what a roof rack is for? Once I get my roof rack I can put a lot of things in containers up top and have more room in the cargo space.
I've looked into roof racks and generally have found them to be cost prohibitive to me once you start adding in various containers, a ladder for the rear hatch, etc..etc...I've also looked into trailer hitch carriers and those generally seem pretty sketchy to me. I have visions of my stuff being strewn all over the highway.
I also question my ability to load stuff onto and off of the roof, I just had a rotator cuff repair done, and suspect the other shoulder will need something done to it in the next couple of years so lifting things up and over my head isn't as easy as it was ten years ago.
All that said, I'll probably end up re-thinking my car camping setup. In the past I'd take a 10x10 canvas tent, cot, large propane stove, large tank of propane, cooler, etc..etc..I guess if I can get myself setup in a more minimalist fashion and maybe get a tent that attaches to the rear of the vehicle it may make things simpler for me.
