It's the little things that make your life easier, and this is one of them. If you're ever under you hood or like your oil changer, these days make is it much nicer, and safer. The stock prop rod is so cheap. Of all the ways to save a dollar.

Anyways glad Redline has a great hood struts kit, super simple to install. Remove the hood bolt, install it back with the upper bracketed attached. On the body side there is already a threaded hole on the passenger side. On the driver side you use one of 4th abs module bolts to secure the lower bracket, pop on the struts and you're done. 15 minutes install.

pros/cons for gas struts.

dont have to waste time placing a hood prop
long term they may fail and the hood falls on your head.

if you oil change yourself the gas struts are nice
me, im lucky if i open it once a quarter

I’m probably gonna get struts for my hood as well at some point.

Still amazed these arent standard on a $50k vehicle.
I disagree. I think most people rarely have the need to open their hood and Toyota knows that. They make conscious business decisions when building vehicles for the market. Why add unnecessary expense to every because a small minority like to spend a bit more time under the hood? I had a 2016 4Runner for eight years. If I opened the hood 10 times during those eight years, I would be shocked. Yes, the mechanics at the Toyota dealership opened it a few more times, but they won't complain to me about the quality of the hood struts. And the new $50K vehicle would be a $60K vehicle if all the little, unnecessary niceties that some people really like were stock. Don't get me wrong, I do think that running boards should be stock on a 4Runner. That is something I do miss because I used those each time I got in and out of my last 4Runner and my new, almost $60K 4runner did not come with those. I don't know, do some of you guys open your hood very frequently?

I open my hood weekly. I guess it is the difference between someone who maintains/pays attention to their vehicle and someone who relies on someone else to discover a major problem on something they paid $50k+ for?

I open my hood at least weekly. I don't have any problem at all with using the prop rod. To each his own I guess.

I am comfortable knowing that one of the 500 warning lights on my dash will make me aware of an impending issue. Do you crawl underneath your vehicle weekly checking for leaks? If not, you probably should do that too.

I do. I also check the tires. This is all part of maintaining a vehicle and being a responsible driver. Relying on warning lights isnt a good idea.

I guess I can consider myself lucky. 60 years old, owned vehicles since age 18 and have been living on the edge by not crawling under my vehicle and popping the hood weekly.

You do you, of course, but I stand by my statement that I believe most people do not pop their hood that often and those who do are just fine with the stock prop rods if it keeps cost down. Just my opinion.
