Hi,

I have the basic TRD OffRoad (not premium), hence I don't have a front camera. Can I add that front camera easily or would that be a major overhaul?

Thank you.

All, saw someone on this forum posted this and thought worth sharing:

Seems we have a nice option out there already!

For the last generation 4Runner, Tacoma, and Tundra there was an "Anytime Front/rear" camera. The item came with two cameras a factory style switch and a harness to plug into the head unit so you could use your Factory screen and head unit. Wolfbox would be great for older model vehicles but the anytime camera is a more factory fit and finish and less wires to deal with.

Nice!

Can you attache or paste a hyperlibk where I can find that option?

You can't use the 5th gen anytime front camera on the 6th gen. It's not just a pinout or connection problem. The new cameras use a different kind of signal and the head unit has no input for the old style cvbs signal.

I actually have one for a 2021 Tundra that was never installed. Too bad the head unit changed, hopefully the company is working on a new solution.

BUT, I was wondering if anyone has looked into sourcing the front camera, and the small harness from Toyota, then plugging it all up and having a tech connect it up?

The next problem is there is no wiring harness from the missing camera locations to the head unit and you can't buy the connectors to make one yourself. The next problem after that is there is no place to connect it to the head unit. The head unit only has a single connector for the backup camera. You need a head unit with the extra inputs for the other cameras, and they are anywhere from $5k to $15k! Or, you need a way to switch all 4 or 6 wires without degrading the digital signal, plus you'd have to cut into the factory wires to splice in the switch because you can't buy the proper connectors.

So hooking up the official front bumper camera from a higher trim level is just not practical unless you somehow have a head unit from a higher trim level and somehow have a cable with the special connectors on both ends.

The head unit pops out very easy without diging up the dash, so it's easy to check if you just have the single green connector near the center or a row of similar connectors in different colors next to the green one. (Not the other 2 black & white sockets off to the driver side that look similar. The camera sockets are all together in the center.)

However there is now an actual kit from BeatSonic that works with ordinary analog cameras!

I just finished installing it and it works. I didn't use the camera they sell with the kit either, just a generic one I already had.

It's not 100% because they left out the button backlight wires, but it is possible to splice those in yourself. But the important part does work. The camera displays on the factory screen. Apparently there IS some pin on the 28-pin or 30-pin connector that accepts video because the kit does not touch the factory backup camera connector, only the center 30-pin and one of the 28-pin connectors.

The kit is pretty cool too with a bit more functionality than I expected. You can have it time out and switch back to the backup camera automatically or you can have it only switch when you press the button. It has inputs for 2 cameras so you can cycle between a total of 3 views including the factory backup camera. You can have it so it's possible to view any camera any time by pressing the button no matter what gear you're in, so you could look at a trailer or something without being in reverse. It even has an option to automatically switch on the front camera any time the vehicle is in a forward gear and moving less than 15mph. All options are programmed using the single camera button and various long-presses and watching the led on the button for different colrs and blink patterns, so you never need to access the control box for dip switches or anything.

It's a little hard to follow but in this thread I show where to splice in the button backlight wires so they go on/off and dim along with all the other dash lights. The pins are available right in the harness that's part of the kit so no touching the factory wires.

Beatsonic sells a Plug and Play front camera harness and camera. It also has the option for an extra camera or rear. https://www.beatsonicusa.com/products/cs15?variant=46414827913367
