Decided to become a one family car. I work from home, wife got a new job 5 minutes away and kids schools are walkable distance. Got a new platinum and off to the races. Mods planned - new wheels, tires, lift.
Suddenly.
Wife gets transferred 60 kms away and kids decide they wanna play for a volleyball club 75kms away. As we all know - these are not the most fuel efficient vehicles to use as commuters - especially 120km daily round trips.
So in order to not break the bank - new Gen6 has to go - probably find a used gen 5 and have to add a hybrid type commuter. Might go corolla, prius etc and stay in the Toyota family. Will be sad to see this one go though. Only red Platinum around too.

rav4 hybrid is roomy enough and efficient enough. or go crazy get a prius and get maximum mileage

FYI the hybrid systems in the rav4, Prius, and others
is vastly superior than the one in the 4runner
and is more reliable due to no slushbox transmission, starter, or other old school
components they kept on the 4runner hybrid. 4runner hybrid is to add torque, rav4 and Prius is an entire system for efficiency

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. We're a one car family as well, and when it comes time to get another car (which probably won't be for a little while), it will probably be something like a Rav4 or Crown Signia for the mpg's while still being spacious for life.

Curious, do you think if you went with an SR5 instead of the Platinum, you'd be in this position? Going to a used 5th gen, with the prices where they are, idk, doesn't seem like you'd be saving a whole lot

My wife has a Crown Signia (2025), very nice car. The Car Care Nut called it the best Toyota available today. We love wagons (I currently have an Audi wagon, but thinking about trading it in for a 6 Gen 4Runner ORP). Keep in mind, the Toyota Hybrid gas mileage falls steeply on the highway, especially over about 65 mph. Also, your mileage will be considerably lower in the Winter, if that matters.

Older gen is on the backburner, and it would only be driven on weekends to tourneys. For not going to focus on a prius or corolla or camry for her to commute in. My lease is up on my vehicle so I'll just get something bigger. Mileage is less important since I work from home and the kids school is a 2 minute drive.

Well we’re looking at 400/month in gas and I have an offer for 5k less than I paid which isn’t bad. So figure I’ll make up the difference in less than a year.

$400 _savings_ in gas? or $400 total cost of gas monthly?

To save $5k in a year by switching, you'd need to _save_ $417/mo on gas from the increased fuel efficiency

Ran the math. For a Prius or Corolla vs that vehicle - add in all the trips from house to volleyball in Hamilton which is 75km each way - it’s dramatic. Talking 150 month vs 500 at least. Plus this thing is much cheaper monthly payments than the 4runner as well. Talking several hundred less a month.

Camry is way more roomy than prius and basically just as efficient. New prius has terrible visibility and low headroom. You can find used crown signias for a great price around me. The take a much larger depreciation hit than other toyotas. I almost bought one and enjoyed the test drive, very comfortable.

If it’s fuel efficiency you’re looking for…I’ve spent the last 4 days (1500 miles) with 2026 RAV4 XLE rental, and was very impressed.

This was the last leg of my trip
