Hello,
New to the board. Always wanted a 4Runner!!! I love the look inside and out of the new 4Runner.
I'm a 60 year old Ontario Canada Tacoma owner looking to upgrade next year to a 4Runner. I'm an original owner of a 2016 Tacoma Limited. Love the truck and have only had 3 minor issues. I have 125,000km on it. Do I keep the V6 for towing or upgrade??
I am towing a 3300lb boat and with the V6 it's decent. Not as good as a full size truck of course.
I will not be going off-road.
Need to decide between the TRD Sport and the TRD Off Road.
Which would give a smoother ride on the road? I feel the Off Road version would have a lot of stuff I would never use.....crawl control, skid plates, locking diff, etc. Are there any options other then the nice 14" screen that are an advantage? The sportech seats seem nice.
Anyone have experience towing a similar weight boat?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Hopefully soon 2026 4Runner Off Road
If you are not going to go off road check out the SR5. The seats are very comfy plus I found that it rode better than the fancy Limited that I also test drove.

It is primarily the engine torque that is important towing. The Tacoma is 243 v 317 lb-ft standard 2025 4runner engine.
Quite a difference and likely a lot better towing.
I don't know if the models you reference are available with the Tow Tech Package but you may want to look into that option. I ran out of summer before I could spend a lot of time with it but it looked promising, was not a lot of money.
If possible delete the foolish rear hatch auto open/close option.
Maybe it can be disarmed I am not sure but while you are back there on your hands and knees trying to plug in the wiring harness which is buried behind the bumper and connect the safety chains and lock down the hitch that hatch will sense motion and start dancing up and down with you in its path.
It is a giant PITA.
Totally not needed imo. Plus not friendly.
The hold feature is nice at the launch ramp, I assume all models have this. It holds the operation in place while you go from brake to accelerator then releases automatically.
For some reason I had big problems backing up compared to the other suv. Not sure why.
Maybe coming from The Tacoma that won't be a problem

Goo luck

ANY trim will tow your boat just fine.
And probably easier than your Tacoma given the increase in both HP and Torque. Go Hybrid if you want to power up long steep hills and pass others at illegal speed without even noticing the trailer. (The torque is silly).
The big screen can be had as an option on most trims (not SR5?). Comes included with Premium package on both Sport and OR. IMHO the ORP is more bang for buck than the Sport but if you would never use MTS and improved offroad suspension, maybe Sport works best? Or go with other suggestion and get an SR5 - then improve it.
You should try to drive one with the Tow Package to see how valuable that option is to you (note: does not appear to be available on SR5?).
If you decide you want the tow package and big screen I think TRD ORPremium may be the answer and there are a lot of them out their (may have to hunt for Tow Package but when I was looking there were a decent number of choices).

Towing close to 4000lb with my ORP hybrid and don't even know it's back there. Night and day better than my 04/18/21 V6's. Get the tow tech package, like $400. Comes with brake controller, electronic rear view mirror, blind spot monitor adjusts for length of trailer, and has a light on the tailgate that shines on the hitch. Decent deal for something you need and a bunch of niceties

I pulled a large pontoon boat (maybe 2500 lbs with trailer) out of the lake up a steep grade with complete ease. ORP hybrid. 4 low with differential lock. I'm sure it would handle 3000 fine
