I think there’s a gap in the market for a product that has the quality of a running board like bonrunner’s, that mounts to the frame. The value prop of such a product is that for off road enthusiasts, it provides a step for the wifu, while not creating a liability for body damage. If it takes an impact off road, it can crumple, or bend, or break and that’s fine. It’s relatively cheap to replace. But most importantly, it didnt crumple your body work. It’s not for the off-roader who needs a legit slider, but for the one who wants a bit of protection or insurance against an occasional misstep.

yes there is a gap between 500-1000 but the problem is, the cheap ones dont want to spend the time/effort/research into building something inbetween. either people build for cheap or you build for robust and you build for that demand. (cheap/robust)

the demand for the inbetween is such a niche market. i can probably count on my hand(s) the number of people that want the inbetween specs in the forums.

you as a builder/seller are going to spend the time/effort to try to sell to maybe 5% of a small group of of people out of a group of people already looking at either cheap or purpose built who is a subset of the general public that has no need for anything beyond oem parts.

I’m sure you’re right about how companies perceive it… otherwise someone would have addressed this need by now.

But I feel that the market is probably bigger and less niche than you suggest. I believe off-road enthusiasts like me that go out on moderate trails a couple of times a year are pretty common. We’re not doing obstacles that demand a slider that can support the weight of the vehicle. In fact, 99.9% of the time any slider we have is a step for the wifu. But there are times when I’m doing a washed out creek crossing and there’s a rock or log I need to work around that is dangerously close to my rocker panels that I wouldn’t mind having a frame mounted running board there to provide some margin or protection. If it takes a hit, and bends, I wouldn’t care… it saved me thousands in potential auto body repairs. But if I just mount a regular running board, almost any slip up is going to create even more risk of expensive body work. I’d be better off not having running boards at all rather than have an extension from my body hanging out there. But then I need to carry a footstool for the wife. So do you really think this use case is that niche?

For me, $1500-$1800 (CAD) for a tubular steel slider that I can hang my truck from seems ridiculously over engineered for my needs and a body mounted running board is a liability more than a help. So there’s an unmet need I think. But maybe I’m more unique than I think.
