If I understand the salesman (and he's not handing me a line) it's Toyota, not the dealership that requires a deposit. Once they have one and know you're serious then you are actually put in line to get one. Otherwise the dealer can't get anything other than what's allotted to them. Since they don't show up on the spreadsheet currently being allotted any Pros and I only want a Pro they either get my deposit or they have to say "Sorry we can't help you". Assuming they work on commission who would want to pass up a sale on a commission on any vehicle, not just a more expensive one.

My salesman was off yesterday but wanted me to call him anyway. I didn't want to disturb him but I may text him either today or tomorrow. I do have several things I want to confirm and would rather not feel rushed, like I was eating into his time off.

toyota doesnt care about a deposit.

toyota sells a vehicle to a dealer they dont sell vehicles to a customer. the dealer has to buy a vehicle first before they can sell it. (this also lends credence to why you see the same general load out of FIO/PIO on models. its easier to sell a vehicle if you get the common items 70-80 % of you customers buy those items. to get odd ball configurations the dealer has to put in an allocation reserve request, like i have done forever as i get stuff they normally dont option out on a vehicle)

after a vehicle is sold to a dealer toyota could care less (except extreme cases) how the dealer goes about selling that vehicle. remember the dealer has a loan out on that vehicle so its in the dealers best interest to sell it quickly (it accruses interest sitting on a dealer lot not sold).

the deposit is for the dealers benefit, it shows your interest and desire to buy a vehicle from them.

most have a refund policy but some have restricted policies.

mine for example has a no refund policy unless they cannot fulfill my request within 4 months and they require a $1000 deposit. personally i am ok with the policy as i get invoice for the restrictions and wait.

You may be right. All I know is the dealers I talked with that don't currently have what I want have to get Toyota to put them on the list. I'm sure that if they do a dealer swap they also want a bit of commitment on my part. The deposit is fully refundable.

This is almost exactly where my car sits. Thanks for sharing this pic. I am going to ask my dealer to give me access to this. He's good about updating me as things progress, but I don't have a nice visual of a timeline for my 4Runner. I am still curious about the process of how my dealer was able to obtain an allocation for an Everest ORP, but with no moonroof. When we looked together, they had nothing in the pipeline without a moonroof. A week later he called and said their manager had obtained one, still in Japan, then asked for a deposit if I wanted it (which I did).

The dealer I'm working with basically has said they can't get one already made. They are trying to find one in production but I don't think they can. The few actually being made most likely have a deposit on them. He didn't come out and say it. What he told me though was when we get within 30 days of delivery they would talk about what my Tundra was worth for a trade in.

If you got your 4Runner in December then I'm guessing sometime in October at the latest the plant started making 2026. Can you look inside your driver's side door jamb at the sticker? I assume Toyota still put them there. It'll say when it was built. At least on the older models there will be a black sticker with information like the VIN number. In the upper right hand corner there will be a date (mm/yy). My Tundra was one of the last ones made in 2007 (09/07). Obviously the sticker is one of the last items to go onto the vehicle but I don't know what date Toyota uses. It could be the date when it's scheduled to be produced, the date when it actually started production, or the date when it was finished.

Yeah it was produced in November and shipped out and got it December 11th.
End of October you should start seeing the incoming inventory on the Toyota site and can see who's getting a 2027 in first. You will not get a good price on it and theres probably nothing they will change in the car.

door jamb only gives you month and year.

you would need a pipeline status printout to see the true build day of your vehicle like below ...
