CarPlay - No spoken Audio directions on Apple Maps

I wonder if anyone is experiencing this. Using Apple Maps (up to date iOS). I connect before starting the car. After about 20 seconds, it's on the screen. If I enter a route and start driving, I only get on screen directions. If I tap the screen a speaker icon comes up on the middle right side of the map screen. I tap the icon (unmuting I think) and I get no spoken directions. The next day I repeat and no spoken directions again until I tap the screen and tap thew speaker icon. It's like it defaults to off and not the last state it was in.

If I use seri for an address, I do get audio, its just the spoken directions seems to default to muted.

If anyone has a fix or can confirm its an known issue, I can live with it.

Probably an audio or volume setting on the vehicle itself (check all the options for this)

I found the onscreen button to unmute on the carplay map screen, as stated in my initial post. The issue is, it seems to default to off for spoken directions . All other audio works including streaming from the iphone, siri, etc.

I had a similar issue with Waze. Its working now but honestly cant say why other than i think my phone was on mute. I googled toyota navigation no sound and just followed a bunch of recommendations regarding settings.

I noticed that the spoken directions or Siri voice can be adjusted independently of the music while its playing. For instance, while Siri is talking it’s possible to turn the volume all the way down but when Siri stops the music comes back to its normal volume. You’ll never hear her again until it’s adjusted up

I would check the settings on your phone. When I first bought my 4Runner the spoken directions worked fine. Then when I was driving with my infant sleeping in the back, I hit a button somewhere on CarPlay that turned the spoken directions off. I haven’t turned them on again since but I suspect this toggle in the maps setting has something to do with it. I use Apple Maps.
