Hello. I have not been driving the ORP in the last few weeks and I wanted to connect a trickle charger to the 12 Volt battery.

I've done searches on the net but getting varying information. I guess it depends on the Gas or Hybrid version.

This question if for the Gas version, non hybrid.

is the 12 volt battery Traditonal Flooded Lead Acid or AGM?

I believe it's a Traditional Flooded Lead Acid battery but I need verification from the experts.

When I trickle charge, I want to make sure that I have the type of battery on the right settings.

Also, what do y'all recommend? A 5 amp trickle charger or a 10 amp trickle charger for this type of battery? I think 5 amp is ideal and 10 amp is overkill for the Runner. Looking into the NOCO trickle chargers. Thoughts?

When y'all get a chance, please post your responses. Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone!

I think even a 5 amp is too high. Most trickle chargers are under 2 amp and some are even 750mah charging. Is this for a temporary situation or are you put a pigtail on the battery for future charging? I've had great luck with the 750mah chargers that will automatically recognize the battery and will float up and down to keep it healthy.

That all set, if your existing charger's lowest setting is 5 amps then that is what I'd use.

Here's my battery. If anyone can confirm that this is one or the other.

I do think it's the Traditional Flooded with the vent caps on top of battery.

I believe AGM batteries are completely sealed.

Need the experts to chime in. My knowledge about car batteries is limited.. Thanks.

It's a traditional flooded battery in your pic as the AGM's are completely sealed. The AGM usually have AGM marked somewhere on it. You can always look in your owner's manual as they would specify the recommended or required battery type.

Thanks @djw4run! I appreciate your help! Now I have peace of mind that I'm charging in the correct settings!

FWIW The 4,5a battery tender I have has AGM and flooded on the same setting.

Charged and maintained my BMW's 92Ah AGM battery just fine.

Thank you! Glad to know!

For all I know, I already ruined the battery before I even got to use it! Lol!

Oh question, @CO/ZA, is your "same setting" on Traditonal Flioded or AGM?

"Maintenance free" means nothing and you can't use that criteria for judging which is flooded lead or AGM as battery manufacturers have been touting "maintenance free" for about 50 years now.

AGM are in fact lead acid batteries, but in contrast to "flooded cell" lead acid, AGM have sheets of fiberglass in between the lead plates that are soaked with sulfuric acid. They are the same chemically. AGM batteries are sealed so that they do not leak hydrogen gas into the passenger compartment. My Noco Genius trickle charger does have an AGM setting but I'm pretty sure most charges will work just fine.

Right, the only two options are 6v or 12v charging, and AGM/Flooded or Lithium charging.

I sold my BMW in April of this year, and the battery was still original to the car and healthy for being 8 years old.

Thanks everyone! The battery is finally fully charged after 25-1/2 hours!

Probably best if I drove the Runner today and keep that battery charged up!
