We have a TRD Off-Road and have recently equipped it with 2” ReadyLift leveling kit. We also have the upgraded TRD black 18” wheels. There aren’t a ton of of choices out there. We are trying to balance wanting a more agressive tread that will be good for occasional off-roading, and provide a comfortable ride while not giving up a bunch in MPG.

We have narrowed it down to three choices. Each have pros and cons.:

Falken AT4W 285/70 (load range C, but heavy at 69lbs)
Falken AT4W 285/65 (load range SL, reasonable at 50lbs)
TOYO Open Country A/T III 275/70 (load range SL, 44lbs)

Thoughts please.

Talk about how you see "occasional off-road." Forest service roads? OHV trails? Rocks, sand, mud? Do you plan on ever airing down?

Might want to check the new BFG KO3. Good for off-road and quiet on road. C rated weighs less than Falken.

Thanks for the question. I would say some OHV easy to moderate. More rocks and mud, not so much sand. I would air down on some trails.

Then I would rule out the SL load tires out of hand, start at the minimum of an LT tire. Airing down an SL tire is a recipe for disaster because the sidewalls are not designed to carry that much load

Those sizes are pretty varied, too. The 285/70 is 33.7", 285/65 is 32.6" and 275/70 is 33.2" and the OEM 265/70 is 32.6"

I would look at
TireSizeLoad RangeService RangeWeight3PMSF
Toyo OC 3LT265/70E12450Yes
BFG KO3LT265/70E12456Yes
Falken AT4WLT265/70E12456Yes
Nitto Recon GrapplersLT275/70E12555Yes
Pirelli Scorpion AT+LT275/70E12556Yes
Yoko Geolandar AT4LT285/65E12554Yes

All of these tires are in the ~3,500lbs load rating, but for all of them thats measured at 80psi. Their actual load capacity at the stock pressure will be MUCH lower, and aired down from there you're really relying on the sidewalls.

I tried to pick tires that are all within a fraction of the OEM diameter, 3PMSF M+S rated, and geared more towards highway manners with off road capabilities than the other way around. Keep in mind that the 285 option is almost an inch wider than stock, so there will be some differences in the look of these on your truck from stock

Actually one more question. If I went with the Falken AT4W 285/70 (load range C) would I need to do any trimming, and could those be aired down if needed?

1. Especially w a 2" lift, I highly doubt you'll have to do any cutting, since its 1" larger
2. Yes they can be aired down, but its all relative. Here is the Tire and Rim Association of America (the ppl who make the load ranges) load data for 117 load index (which the Falken is) listed in pounds. A point of reference is the OE Michelin LTX Trail are rated one level higher at 118

22psi23psi24psi25psi26psi27psi28psi29psi33psi
117188519842038208321832239227123702646

Now you may look at those numbers, say "wait a minute, my truck is only 6000lbs, I'm golden" but its not so simple. Keep in mind that the OE pressure on the OE tire is set so that there is 2723lbs of load capacity, which is set with a 10% margin of overhead. Now, if you just gonna drive down some fire roads, you should have no problem at all with any of the tires you've considered. However, if you're gonna start with a tire that already has a lower capacity that stock, and then air down from there, and THEN go off-road, you could run into issues

Working with a 6000lbs truck, you can see where a 117 load index would be in trouble in this situation even at 30psi. When one wheel comes off the ground that weight is distributed onto the others. If this isn't gonna be you, you've gonna be fine. If this IS gonna be you, I would recommend going with an E load/121+ load index tire

Appreciate your input. Went with 275/70 Nitto Recon’s. Very happy so far.
