I came from a gen4. On the gen4, the rear was flat with no mods. Toyota, in their wisdom, removed this as part of the design for the gen6. So, I DIYed my own platform to level the rear for sleeping in the back, with added stoage. Here are the quick details:
- 26 ORP gas
- rear seats removed (no dash lights)
- 2 x 4s on end for added height to store stuff. since its sloped near rear seat area, there is more storage under there.
- entire frame is in 2 pieces for easy install and removal.
- platform is roughly 44 inches wide at narrowest. And 66 inches long.
- both front seats and go all the way back, and fully recline.
- platform made of 3/4 inch plywood.
- platform is in 4 section, all removable.
- frame is anchored in 6 total places: 4 using rear seat attachment points, and 2 from rearward cargo net attachments.
- Approx. $200 in cost for supplies.
- covered in a cheap felt. This felt probably not going to last that long.
Quick story behind it:
My use case is I like to sleep in the rear of my 4runner while stealth camping and remote camping. Depending on where I am, I need to change clothes back there, and I like to be able to sit up in bed. So the platform needs to be as low as possible.
I started by ordering a BamBed Solo. I instantly hated it. There was just no room above the bed. it also takes up an enormous amount of space. I returned it. (note: if you order a BamBed, be very sure you want it, as they have an expensive restocking fee, plus you pay return shipping. Was an overall expensive return). It was my mistake, not BamBed's. But the whole Bambed experience sucked.
In lots of online research, there are just no platform options out there. All are very expensive drawer systems, which take up more space than Im willing to give up. I also do not need drawers. I also do not want to remove any carpeting. I can have my platform out and rear seats back in, in under an hour.
I welcome comments or critiques. This is still a work in progress.
