So, long story short — a big rig decided it liked the front end of my 2023 M3 Comp xDrive far more than I did (that’s a story for another thread). This all happened not long after I sold my 2017 3GT — the dealer offered me $25K for a car with 90K miles and a full Christmas tree glowing across the dash. How could I say no?
Being between vehicles and driving a 4GT rental led me straight into picking up a Mudbath TRD Pro 4G Tacoma.
I’m sure you’re wondering why I’m talking about a Tacoma on a 4Runner forum, right? Well… keep reading. It gets a lot better.
So, with the M3 sidelined and my wife constantly checking out the 4GT interior, curiosity got the better of her. She looked over at me while we were going to lunch, said, “I wonder what the new 4Runners are like? Your interior feels so much nicer than mine!” She had a 2019 5G 4Runner — it’s pictured below.
After what felt like a couple of weeks of online builds, color debates, and side-by-side comparisons, we finally locked in on a Mudbath TRD Pro 4Runner. Of course, she wanted to match me — and honestly, I didn’t mind one bit. The stance, the on-road presence, that aggressive factory look — it was love at first sight after seeing various social media pictures.
So began the hunt…
And I’m sure you can probably guess where I'm going with this. I found one that was about an hour away. After a few intense days of bartering back and forth with the dealer, crunching trade-in numbers, and chasing down every discount angle imaginable, I managed to negotiate it from $80K down to just a hair under $70K before our trade-in even hit the table. Pretty sure the incoming 2026s worked in our favor there, though.
So after all of that, we now own a new 2025 TRD Pro 4Runner in Mudbath.
Since I had already tuned my 4GT the moment I bought it — right there in the dealer lot at 11 miles — we knew history was about to repeat itself.
So, just before leaving the dealership, we had full-on, self-induced déjà vu. We signed the papers, walked out into the parking lot, and with 20 miles on the odometer, I flashed the OTT (Overland Torque tune) by Overland Tailor Tuning right there in the dealership parking lot. The finance manager joined us, as he was curious about getting his 2023 tuned in a couple of days. I forgot to snap a picture, but here’s a quick clip from when it finished flashing.
With all of that soaking up the first few hours of our day, finally, my wife and I were on the way home in our tuned 2025 TRD Pro.
I’ll be honest — I wasn’t sure how the 4Runner would feel compared to the Tacoma. It’s heavier, a bit bulkier, and I half-expected the weight of it to dull the punch. But wow… night and day doesn’t even begin to describe it.
It went from “comfortable weekend off-road grocery getter” to the “why isn’t everyone talking about this?” arena. The throttle response is electric, the torque curve fills in like a tidal wave, and the shifts? Imagine slicing across a mirror-still lake at sunrise — that’s how smooth it feels.
Let me tell you… This thing is absolutely insane.
The throttle mapping completely redefines the 2.4L hybrid turbo. It comes alive in a way that feels almost as if I were back in my M3. The transmission glides through gears like a knife through warm butter — no hesitation, no lag, just a seamless, fluid motion. I’d venture to say it’s also daringly close to my old 2025 TRD Pro Tundra — maybe even better in the way it delivers instant torque and control. Sport/Tow mode? Pure chaos in the best way possible. The throttle response is so perfectly calibrated that it practically dares you to go full throttle. I wanted nothing more than to redline it on the way —but rush-hour traffic had other plans haha.
I had never felt this excited behind the wheel of her 5G, and that one was tuned also. But this? This is an entirely new world.
A massive shoutout to OTT & @JustDSM for continuing to deliver precisely what enthusiasts ask for — transparent data, meticulous hybrid support, and yet another top-tier calibration that completely reinvents how these Toyotas drive.
If you’ve been on the fence about tuning your 4Runner (or any of Toyota’s latest setups), stop hesitating and do it — you won’t regret it for a second. There's no doubt this is how every 6G4R on the road should be driving.
Thanks for sticking through my rambling. Happy to answer any questions anyone has — until then, I’ll be over in the mods section planning what’s next for both vehicles. Hopefully, parts are interchangeable.
