Will E Load 34 inch tires stress the Gas Turbo 4

Was looking to get new KO3 for my ORP. I wanted to get as close to 34” as possible so I didn’t need to do any modifications. However, it seems every tire the is 285/70R18 or 295/70R18 is an E load rated tire and exceed the OEM tire by about 20lbs per tire, giving the powertrain about an extra 100lbs of weight to against.

Does anyone think this would be detrimental to the power train in the long run and should just stick to 33 inch with a SL rating? Wondering what everyone is running as well. Any sluggishness or issues with the non-hybrid power train?

I run E-load on 275/70/18. Tranny handles them with ease. Your powertrain is made for towing 6k lbs. I wouldn't be worry about anything.

Plenty members run 35" tires with matching spare too.

You could drop to a 17. Lots of tire sizes in your range on a 17 that are D and C load.

Look at the Bridgestone Dueler Ascent. Lightest 34, 18" tire in E load in those sizes. It's an amazing tire. I wanted k03s too until I saw the weight. Almost 10lbs less per tire!

You might be able to get the KO3 as a C. I was able to for the sr5 as a 285/70/17. Not every tire store may stock the C so you may have to order them.

Note that the SL rating has a higher load rating than the LT C. I just double checked this at Nitto web site and discount also told me this. I am running Nitto Terra Grappler g3 SL. I want the added paved snow and rain the SL gives me and I am not rock crawling in my 4runner. I do spend time off the hardtop. OnX green

I actually got rid of mine, in favor of the new Pirelli Scorpion XTM ones.

They're even lighter in the same 275/70/18 size, at 50lbs for the Pirelli and 53lbs for the Bridgestone Ascents.

A C load KO3 in 285/70R17 is 56lbs by comparison.

Yes it probably depends on the tire. It is what I was told at Discount Tire and I just went back onto Nitto's site. I have 18 inch rims. They do not make a C for 18 Inch so I looked at 17. SL = 2756 lb and LT C = 2470 lb. 18 inch rim SL gives me the same load as 17. For the Nitto Terra Grapple G3 a YouTube video compared the SL and LT. The SL had more Sipiing to give it better wet road traction. I live in the Pacific Northwest. I replaced the OEM michelin mostly because I wanted a Triple Peak Rating needed in this area when traction devices are required and it's nice to be a little more aggressive. I did 7,000 miles on the OEM Michelin tires including climbing muddy hills. The 4runner even did great in those less aggressive tires. Note a am a person who still has his air dam on. I call it my feeler gauge.

I researched the Pirelli's also before purchasing the Ascent's. In my 295/70r18 size they both weigh in at 57 lbs. I got a much better deal on the Bridgestone's through DIscount Tire. The Scorpions were my #2 choice.

The only thing you need to worry about is fuel mileage. The other is the lighter the tire the easier it will be to get a flat (in general). Lighter means thinner. Is it much of a concern, probably not. But I have gotten flats on my driveway due to sharp rocks puncturing the tire after the tread is worn down to less than 1/4 less. It's only happened on tires on my wife's Rav4. The LT tires on my tundra never have had an issue.

As for the drivetrain, If it was designed so that an extra 100lb of tire mass would wear it out sooner Toyota would be fixing transmissions all the time. They over build them so the can go hundreds of thousands of miles without an issue. Even then a few do fail early. If they tried to cut it that close a lot more would just get build under. After all Toyota has to build the drivetrain for the guy who sees every stop light as a 1/4 mile drag strip.

I wish the tire manufacturers would come up with a rating system for all-terrain and off-road tires. The LT Load Rating is about how much pressure you can put into the tire and so how much of a load it can carry. If the tire becomes more puncture resistant with increased load Rating it is a byproduct of thickening a tire so that can carry more weight. ( Oversimplified)
