I can only speak for myself, but detailing is a hobby for me. I just happen to own a 4Runner, so I own a clean, detailed 4Runner. Owning a particular vehicle doesn’t mean you have to neglect it. Even people who off-road regularly aren’t doing it seven days a week, so why not enjoy driving a clean, well-maintained vehicle when you’re commuting or running errands?
As for using dish soap to wash a car, it’ll work if you’re in a pinch, but it’s not ideal. It’s kind of like using hand soap or dish soap in the shower. Will it clean you? Sure. I’ve done it before at an Airbnb when there wasn’t any body wash. But there are products specifically designed for your skin and hair that are gentler and won’t dry things out.
Car shampoos are the same idea. They’re not magic, they’re just formulated to be slicker on paint, safer on waxes, sealants, and coatings, less harsh on rubber trim and seals, and easier to rinse off. They’re designed for the job.
At the end of the day, it’s your vehicle, take care of it however you want.
